Job Description Summary:

The Position

Reporting to the SVP & General Counsel, the executive in this role will be responsible for global litigation and employment matters facing the organization. This includes coordinating with international colleagues outside of the litigation team on international litigation matters. S/he will advise the GC and other members of the Executive Management Team, the Board, or business leaders, as appropriate, focusing on the most important litigation risks and issues facing the organization, and providing effective counsel to the business unit GCs.

The Vice President, Chief Litigation Counsel will lead a global team responsible for providing representation for PayPal's internal client base while overseeing a variety of critical legal services that have significant impact to the business.

Key Responsibilities

Specifically, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Setting the strategic direction for the Litigation and Employment teams and oversee performance to ensure key business objectives are met

  • Being accountable for performing and managing all litigation activities on assigned matters through the trial and appellate stages, including among other things research, pleadings, motions, discovery, depositions, conferences, trials, mediations, arbitrations, appeals

  • Managing an annual litigation budget and expenses

  • Recommending key legal and/or litigation strategies and resolutions to senior management and the Board

  • Being charged with overseeing internal procedures and standards for document discovery and preparing and reviewing court filings

  • Developing trial strategies and keep team current on a wide range of best practices

In addition, this leader will be expected to perform the following Management & Leadership roles:

  • Full management responsibility of professional staff (attracting, retaining and developing talent)

  • Manage multiple, large-scale and complex litigation, as well as teams (with both internal and external partners)

  • Select and manage outside counsel

  • Guide and advise team members in the more complex phases of work

  • Embody utmost collaboration, active listening, and strategic thought, and develop these skill sets in team

  • Provide appropriate opportunities for professional growth and development of team members

  • Licensed or eligible to practice law in the United States

  • MBA or LLM is a plus

  • 15+ years of relevant experience and a law degree from an ABA accredited school

  • Proven and experienced litigator with a sterling reputation

  • Deep understanding of the financial services industry is required and could include experience gained in consumer financial services, payments, processing, financial technology or another diversified financial services firm.

  • Proven leader at a company with proven in-house experience leading and managing a team of experience lawyers and litigation professionals.

  • Expertise litigating complex regulatory matters and government investigations and well-suited to navigate and assess litigation risks in a high-stakes and highly-regulated environment

  • A strategic thinker who has the outstanding ability to conjure creative solutions to complex regulatory conundrums.

  • A thought leader who is able lead and drive regulatory solutions.

  • Good understanding of online related technology and online businesses.

Travel Percent:


Colorado [and/or] New York City Only: The starting pay for this position is as mentioned below per year, plus annual bonus. We take into consideration an individual's background and experience in determining final salary. The VP, General Counsel interacts with government officials as appropriate and is responsible for compliance with federal and local laws governing non-profit institutions of higher learning. The VP, General Counsel also supervises the University's Office of Ethics and Office of Risk Management.</p><p>Candidates with experience in senior legal positions (e.g., General Counsel or Deputy General Counsel) at large academic institutions are highly preferred.
