Position: Vice President & Actuary, Insurance Risk

Job Location: Bridgewater, New Jersey

Department: The Insurance and Product Risk function within Global Risk Management function has as its primary responsibilities to provides second line of defense oversight services for key functions within product pricing, actuarial assumptions setting, valuation and allocation of capital to business segments. The team also sets and maintains Insurance Risk framework through the development of policies on management of Insurance Risk, enterprise standards for pricing products and for identifying, managing and quantifying insurance risk.

The Role: The VP Insurance Risk will lead a team whose primary responsibilities are to provide second line of defense oversight services for key actuarial functions, including the effective review and challenge of actuarial assumptions, experience studies and controls related to valuation. The team also sets policies, standards and frameworks for insurance risk management of the Enterprise.

Key Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with SVP, Insurance Risk set global policies, framework and standards with respect to insurance risk measurement, management and monitoring across MetLife and monitor compliance.

  • With minimal oversight, provide second line of defense oversight for actuarial functions including the effective review and challenge of best estimate actuarial assumptions, experience studies, and controls related to valuation.

  • Learn and promote industry best practice on analytics for insurance risk and effective in-force product management to improve performance and / or reduce risk.

  • People management via developing talent, empowering individuals and management of diverse teams to drive engagement and performance. Address training needs and gaps for individuals and groups within group and among stakeholders.

  • Reports to: SVP, Insurance and Product Risk

  • Direct reports/team: Three direct reports, four total reports

  • Key Stakeholders: Actuarial, Valuation, Product / Pricing, Chief Actuaries, CFOs and CROs

Candidate Qualifications:


Essential Business Experience and

Technical Skills:
  • FSA or equivalent.

  • 15+ years of actuarial experience within insurance company or consulting.

  • Preferred experience in predictive analytics and knowledge of industry best practice in application in actuarial and insurance risk management strongly preferred.

  • Proven ability to work effectively with internal partners in Actuarial, Product, Risk and Finance organizations.

  • Broad knowledge of financial risk management, actuarial risks, understanding of emerging accounting and regulatory standards, and technology savvy forward thinking attitude with extensive strategic and business improvement experience.

  • A proven leader of people who is able to recruit and develop a top-notch team capable of supporting future growth. An executive who understands playing the catalyst role in a productive way.

  • Excellent presentation skills and experience in working with senior executives and operating unit companies in business planning and strategy development.

  • Has worked in fast-growth, global organizations. Hands on, yet extraordinarily strategic.

  • Ability to command credibility and influence outcomes at the highest levels; strong influencing skills and the ability to operate effectively within a decentralized, geographically dispersed organization.
