The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Heersink School of Medicine, Department of Medicine (DOM) seeks applications of faculty to serve as Vice Chair for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The role of the Vice Chair will be to lead the DOM's work towards becoming an inclusive academic community that welcomes and nurtures people from diverse backgrounds and achieves equity for its members.

The Vice Chair will be a core member of the Chair's leadership team and will work directly with this group to achieve this goal. The Vice Chair will lead the DOM Office of DEI and will collaborate closely with the UAB Office of the Vice President for DEI, the Office of Diversity & Inclusion for the Health System and the SOM Office of Diversity and Inclusion. The Vice Chair for DEI will influence and drive change within the Department of Medicine and lead efforts to earn trust with the community UAB serves.

MD, PhD or MD/PhD

  • Will be a full-time faculty member in the DOM

  • Is self-aware and able to cultivate relationships across diverse backgrounds

  • Understands historic and current barriers to inclusiveness

  • Possesses exceptional communication skills and empathy

  • Demonstrates ability to independently develop initiatives and drive toward stated goals

  • Has a strong desire to lead change

  • Has a record of conducting DEI-based efforts in health disparities research and/or education (broadly defined as differences in health that are closely linked with social or economic disadvantage)
