Supervises a group of Veterinary Technicians in a hospital or department, ensuring standards of nursing care are met and coordinating scheduling and training. Contributes to hiring and performance management processes and regularly assumes regular shift work.

Summary:

The Technician Supervisor at Overland Veterinary Hospital has the main responsibility of technical and nursing support for the veterinarians, as well as managerial responsibilities for the rest of the technical staff. The Supervisor must be able to accept responsibility, listen to staff and clients objectively, communicate well and be organized. The Supervisor will help set the tone for a positive image of Overland Veterinary Clinic with clients, co-workers, vendors, and the public.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Schedule technicians according to hospital needs.

  • Approve vacation and paid time off requests. Ensure they are coordinated and entered correctly on calendar.

  • Receive calls from technicians and assistants regarding tardiness and illness. Reassign responsibilities of absent employees or call in another employee to cover shift. Inform Hospital Coordinator and Hospital Manager of shift changes or call outs.

  • Act as a liaison between the doctors, front desk, and technician crew.

  • Perform all tasks assigned to veterinary technician.

  • Maintain attendance records for tech staff & communicate any problems to management.

  • Supervise technical staff for daily efficiency.

  • Acts as the in-charge of the treatment board.

  • Ensure compliance to daily, weekly, monthly checklists for technician staff.

  • Maintain medical equipment per manufacturer's instructions.

  • Ensure all technicians follow proper safety procedures.

  • Oversee forms compliance, PE sheet, lab sheets, all radiology & lab logs.

  • Monitor compliance with OSHA, DEA, FDA, Bio-Hazard requirements.

  • Encourage and oversee training of all technicians.

  • Take physical inventory of medications and medical supplies on bi-annual basis.

  • Be responsible for weekly pharmacy order for manager's final approval.

  • Return expired drugs to purchaser or distributor.

  • Ensure proper housekeeping procedures for hospital.

  • Attend and support management in all department and staff meetings.

  • Conduct department meetings and staff training as needed.

  • Handle & document all minor disciplinary issues & review with management.

  • Be liaison between staff and management.

  • Refrain from negative talk, gestures, implied attitudes that reflect poorly on the Clinic.

  • Support the Hospital Coordinator and Hospital Manager in all aspects to staff.

  • Other duties asked to keep hospital running smoothly and provide optimal pet care.

  • Work habits include regular attendance, teamwork, initiative, dependability, and promptness.

  • Maintain patient, client, and employee confidentiality.

Controls Over Work:

The Clinic Coordinator and veterinarians provide continuing or individual assignments indicating tasks, limitations, expectations, deadlines, and priorities. The Hospital Manager or Managing DVM provides additional, specific instructions for new, difficult, or unusual assignments, including suggested work methods or advice on source materials available.

The Technician Supervisor must use initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently without specific instructions but refer deviation problems and unfamiliar situations to the Clinic Coordinator and/or Hospital Manager. The doctors ensure that finished medical work and methods are technically accurate and comply with instructions or established procedure. The review level increases with more difficult assignments if the head technician has not previously performed similar assignments. The Hospital Manager and/or Technician Manager may provide administrative supervision.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Manages 4 -10 employees in the Technician Department. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the hospital's policies and applicable laws. Maintains constant communication with Hospital Manager when carrying out responsibilities associated with interviewing and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

The supervisors must accept responsibility not only for their own work, but the work of people in their department and for the general flow of the workday throughout the hospital. Any concerns with hospital rules or decisions must be discussed only with upper management. At no time will it be acceptable to share confidential information with staff members or associate doctors.

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience:

Associate degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

At least, thirty percent of the supervisor's annual continuing education must incorporate managing people, handling client concerns and workflows.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before small groups of customers or employees of hospital.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of clinic procedures for receiving, treating, and scheduling patients, ordering medical supplies, and requesting laboratory tests.

  • Knowledge of the use, care and storage of veterinary instruments and materials and equipment.

  • Knowledge of sterilization techniques for various instruments and materials.

  • Knowledge of the instruments, materials and standardized procedures used in the full variety of treatments to prepare and provide "table side" assistance.

  • Knowledge of basic types and uses for routine medications diets and shampoos.
