REQUIRED: Animal handling experience; self-motivation; strong time management, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills; and proficiency with Microsoft Office.

PREFERRED: undergraduate degree in animal science, biology, or related field; experience with anesthesia administration and pre- and post-operative animal care; and AALAS certification preferred. Training will be provided. Job #18214-5

VETERINARY TECHNICIAN, Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM), to provide clinical veterinary support for animals (primarily mice) housed at MIT and perform colony management and technical services. Specific duties include completing daily clinical rounds; assessing and monitoring the health of laboratory animals and reporting necessary information to supervisors, the clinical veterinarian, and the researchers; completing food/water regulation and post-surgery safe-guard monitoring; providing colony management services such as birth dating pups, weaning, ear tagging, tailing, skin biopsy for genotyping, set up breeding pairs, and recordkeeping; providing technical services upon request, including injections (subcutaneous, intraperitoneal, and intravenous) and blood collection (cardiocentesis, submandibular, and intravenous); and collecting samples for routine sentinel testing.

The successful candidate will share our passion for conducting exciting research. * DUTIES * Prepares required supplies and instruments; pre-anesthetizing and moving animals to surgery room * Sets-up surgery with necessary instruments and anesthetic equipment; restrains animals; monitors animals under anesthesia by documenting vital signs, conditions, and changes; operates medical equipment & surgical tools according to safety guidelines; scrubs surgical site; places IV catheters. * Cleans-up post-surgical site and surgery room; maintains sterile conditions; prepares, verifies, and administers medications; disposes of animal carcasses following established procedures. * Cleans, sterilizes and wraps surgical instruments; cleans hospital floors, and countertops. * Restocks inventory and verifies shelf life; follows safety standards and hospital procedures; complies with legal regulations. * Maintains equipment by following operating instructions; troubleshoots breakdowns while informing director of situation; maintains equipment supplies; performs preventive maintenance; calls for repairs. * Creates inventory reorder list and informs person placing order; places orders for medical supplies.
