Veterinary Technician

The Department of Surgery is a seeking a Veterinary Technician to support exciting and fast-paced research projects in a xenotransplantation laboratory in the Department of Surgery at the Johns Hopkins Medical Campus. We are looking for a hard-working professional to join our group as an integral part of our clinical research team. The laboratory is active in kidney research including two research areas: 1) xenotransplantation, and (2) islets studies pertaining to diabetes. A technician is needed to assist in experiments using large animal models and must have experience in basic laboratory techniques, including animal care, handling and surgery/anesthesia monitoring. Good lab practices (GLP) must be followed for all study materials. The successful candidate must be organized and detailed oriented with animal care, animal handling, surgical record keeping, a data acquisition.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • The technician is responsible for daily observations and record keeping of study subjects using GLP practices. This included organizing and maintaining animal, experimental, and pharmaceutical records.

  • Will maintain the weight and medical records of animals and serves as a liaison to veterinary staff in the Department of research animal resources.

  • Broad knowledge of basic animal medicine (pharmacology, proper restraint/handling, venipuncture, laboratory testing)

  • Thorough understanding and knowledge of medical terminology, medications, and disease processes

  • Attention to detail

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Proficient computer skills

  • Perform drug dose calculations for injectable medications and CRIs

  • Administer medications by IV, IM, SQ, PO

  • Prepare animals for surgery/ diagnostic procedures/blood collection using, IV placement, intubation, clipping and scrubbing animals, anesthetic administration, anesthetic monitoring

  • Uses mechanical ventilator and is capable of trouble shoot machinery during long surgical cases

  • Act as the operating room nurse, surgical assistant, or anesthetist.

  • Set up and break down surgical facilities including cleaning and disinfecting the suite and cleaning, packing and sterilizing instruments.

  • Endotracheal intubation of difficult species including non-human primates and swine.

  • Prepare tissue, blood, and urine samples for submission

  • Provide post-operative care including pain management and animal comfort.

  • Maintain all clinical and surgical equipment including anesthesia machines, ECG, cautery, autoclaves, etc.

  • Provide communication with veterinarians, and research fellows.

  • Assist with lifting companion animals weighing 50-100+ pounds.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent. Associate's degree inVeterinary Technology, Animal Science or Biology preferred.

  • One year of related experience.

  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Starting Salary Range: $15.70 - $26.25 HRLY ($35,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University's salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency

Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination.
