Minimum QualificationsHigh School Diploma or G.E.D.;


Two (2) years experience working as a Licensed Veterinary Technician at an animal hospital, animal shelter, or related organization. Work experience must include administering anesthesia and performing surgical procedures.

1.Possession of a valid Veterinary Technology License issued by the NYS Education Department's Division of Professional Licensing Services.
2.Possession of a valid New York State Class D driver's license at time of appointment.
3.Candidates must have a satisfactory police record, background check and medical screening.

General DescriptionThis is a skilled technical position in the City of Rochester Animal Services. The employee in this position performs tasks to assist and support veterinarians with a variety of animal health activities such as: medical examinations, surgical procedures, and treatments.

Direct supervision is received from a licensed veterinarian or shelter management. Related duties are performed as required.Typical Work ActivitiesExamines animals to assist in diagnosing injuries or illness;

Administers medications, vaccinations, and anesthesia drugs;

Maintains drug logs;

Prepares animals for surgery;

Cleans, disinfects, and organizes surgical suite and clinic;

Assists with surgical sterilization and other veterinary procedures as directed by a licensed veterinarian;

Maintains inventory of veterinary supplies;

Advises and educates animal owners on future care and treatment;

Prepares instruments, equipment, and materials for surgery;

May train or instruct volunteers and staff in basic preparation for surgery or cleaning and sterilizing of surgical instruments;

Performs other veterinary and animal care responsibilities as directed by a licensed veterinarian or

shelter management;

Operates a vehicle to transport animals and pick up shelter supplies.

Exercises independent professional judgment in the assessment of animal health and consults with veterinarians and investigators regarding appropriate diagnosis, therapy, and management. Assists in the planning, implementation, and modification of animal use in experiments. Works directly with the veterinarians and interacts with staff, residents, medical students, and other personnel using the animal facilities to exchange information and resolve problems. Serves as a surgical tech in the operating room, administering anesthesia and providing postoperative care. Trains residents/fellows/temporary lab personnel in laboratory animal methodology. Responsible for maintaining anesthetic, surgical, and radiological equipment and medical supplies, including pharmaceuticals. Assists in the maintenance and ordering of lab equipment, supplies and experimental animals, writing IACUC protocols, making modifications and submitting progress reports. Perform tissue harvest and dissections. Acts as a liaison between the lab and Department of Comparative Medicine. Sets up and performs established lab procedures in support of lab goals, grant commitments, i.e. experimental small and large animal studies, assays, cell/tissue culture, etc. Prepares labeled tubes and collects, enters and keeps detailed laboratory notes. Qualifications Associates degree in Veterinary Technology, Veterinary Technologist State Certification with some experience with lab animal species required. Additional qualifications Certification as Laboratory Animal Technician or Laboratory Animal Technologist through the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science is desirable. Must be able to follow oral and written directions. Must have the ability to organize and carry out medical and surgical techniques independently and includes small and large animal survival and acute, blood vessel catherization and blood draws, acute and 24 hour urine collection, administration of anesthesia, hemodynamic monitoring, tissue harvesting and drug administration (i.e. pump implantation, oral, intraperitoneal injection, etc). Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position. Must be willing to work weekends occasionally. Must be able to work well with others. Sponsorship is not currently available for this position. Exemption status Non-exempt Compensation Detail Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum pay rate is 22.21 per hour.
