Job Title: Veterinary Skills and Competencies (VSAC) Teaching Technologist

Job Description:

Job Summary

This position will act as a clinical skills instructor and facilitator for the Veterinary Skills and Competencies (VSAC) courses. They will work with lecturers and faculty to develop course materials including instructional videos, create learning objectives, create evaluation rubrics and implement training exercises. This individual will demonstrate technical skills to students, oversee practice of skills and techniques by the students, and, where appropriate, develop and grade homework, quizzes, tests, or other evaluations and assessments. The position will work closely with the VSAC instructors of record as well as the VSAC Coordinator. Other teaching duties will be assigned such as in the student surgery laboratory.

Duties and Responsibilities

Course Coordination

  • Working with the instructors of record, create the schedules for teaching and assessing clinical skills for all veterinary medical students in the 6 Veterinary Skills and Competencies courses. Work with the instructor of record to coordinate instructors and animal usage for clinical skills courses. Develop schedules to ensure that each student has sufficient instructional time and assessment time. This individual will coordinate with many faculty and veterinary nurses in the Purdue Veterinary Hospital (PVH).

Veterinary Skills and Competency Course Development

  • Work closely with the Clinical Skills Laboratory Manager to develop models and other methods to help students learn and practice clinical skills. Responsibilities include creation of new instructional models, creation of instructional videos and learning modules, upkeep of existing models, inventory control of instructional supplies and equipment needed for the VSAC courses.

Clinical Skills Laboratory Instruction

  • Working closely with instructors in the veterinary and veterinary nursing programs and the Clinical Skills Laboratory Manager, this position will teach and assess veterinary medical students on various skills. This position will also supervise the students' practice of skills outside of scheduled class time. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to teaching techniques to students, assessing student competency, providing feedback, entering grades as appropriate, changing/setting up learning spaces for scheduled learning activities and staffing open practice sessions. Tutor clinical year students requiring remedial help with clinical skills.

  • Other duties as assigned, such as teaching in student surgery laboratories, assisting in veterinary nursing courses, assisting with summer camps and serving on committees.

Requirements:

  • Must be a credentialed veterinary technician/veterinary nurse and a graduate of an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program.

  • Bachelor's degree in veterinary technology/veterinary nursing or related field and 3 years of experience required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered (ex. Associate's degree and 4-5 years of experience).

  • Experience as a veterinary technician/veterinary nurse required. Experience must include: animal handling and restraint, performing common clinical nursing care procedures, obtaining laboratory samples, assisting veterinarians with diagnostic or surgical procedures. One year of teaching experience (classroom or clinical) is preferred. Experience working with both small and large animals is preferred.
