Veterinary Research Technician

The Johns Hopkins University is seeking a Veterinary Research Technician to support exciting and fast-paced research projects in a systems neuroscience laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Johns Hopkins Medical Campus. The laboratory is active in three research areas: 1) behavioral testing of auditory perception, 2) neurophysiological investigations of auditory processing, and 3) development of a transgenic animal model. A technician is needed to assist in experiments using small animal models and must have experience in basic laboratory techniques, including animal care, handling and surgery. The successful candidate must be organized and detailed while handling animal care, animal handling, surgical record keeping, data acquisition, and data analysis in the laboratory.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • The technician is responsible for maintaining a breeding colony and works with administrative staffs and veterinarians to ensure the dietary requirements of the animals, including special dietary requirements not available through the University's routine animal care facilities.

  • Will maintain the weight and medical records of animals and serves as a liaison to veterinary staff in the Department of Comparative Medicine.

Animal Handling

  • The technician will assist researchers with procedures for handling, injecting, and surgically preparing animals.

  • Will assist researchers in transporting animals, preparing them in experimental apparatus, inspecting and maintaining the animals' health, and other tasks as necessary for behavioral or physiological experiments.

Surgical Technique

  • The technician is responsible for assisting researchers with preparation and conducting of sterile surgeries required by the research.

  • Monitors the animal's recovery from surgery and provides post-operative care.

  • One-year related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity and experience with veterinary care or biomedical research involving small animals.

  • Additional training will be provided through the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS). Technicians typically earn certification as a Registered Laboratory Animal Technician.

  • Familiarity and experience with sterile surgical technique, including anesthesia methods, good surgical practice, maintenance of sterility, preparation and care for instruments, and post-surgical monitoring and care for animals.

  • Familiarity with good practice in laboratory safety, animal welfare, and disease protection for both animals and staff.

  • The successful candidate will complete the University's suite of courses in laboratory safety, biohazard, and animal welfare.

Physical Requirements

  • The work is subject to precise measures of quantity and quality. Biohazardous conditions attendant to work with small laboratory animals will be present in this work environment, which mandate attention to safety considerations.
