JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Animal Diagnostic Laboratory (ADL) at The Pennsylvania State University (PSU), one of three laboratories of the Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostic Laboratory System (PADLS), is seeking a Veterinary Pathologist to provide diagnostic services in support of the laboratory's mission to protect the health and productivity of Pennsylvania's food-production animals, ensure food safety, and protect human health. This full-time, 48-week, non-tenure track position will be filled at the Assistant Clinical, Associate Clinical, or Clinical Professor level.

This is a term position funded for one year from date of hire. The possibility of long-term funding to support this position is excellent.

The primary (80%) responsibility of this position will consist of providing necropsy services and serving as a case coordinator for mammalian species submitted to the ADL. This will include performing gross and histopathologic examinations on necropsy cases, the generation of necropsy reports, and providing pathology-focused consultation to a diverse group of submitting veterinarians and clients.

The position will require communication skills pertaining to the provision of results and providing interpretation to clients (veterinarians, livestock producers, regulatory agency officials, etc.) in a timely and effective manner. This position will also involve clinicopathologic collaboration with, and support from the other mammalian pathologist at the ADL, and the PSU Veterinary Extension and Field Investigation Team in the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences. This position also involves the unique opportunity to consult with veterinary pathology colleagues within the PADLS system, at both the UPenn New Bolton Center, and the PA Veterinary Laboratory.

The selected candidate will also develop new, or expand existing test offerings/test platforms to better serve ADL's clients.

The incumbent may, as required and in conjunction with her/his colleague(s), provide managerial oversight for daily operations of the pathology section and supervise technical staff. They will ensure implementation of quality control/assurance and safety in accordance with the laboratory Quality Management system and University policies.

The successful candidate will contribute (10%) to the teaching of undergraduate courses (e.g. VBSC 420; General Animal Pathology), and will also teach students in independent studies courses (e.g. VBSC 496), participate in veterinary student externship experiences, and assist with the instruction and training of pathology residents.

Involvement (10%) in collaborative applied or basic research projects, the presentation and publication of case reports, and/or the development of novel diagnostic techniques related to topics of animal and/or zoonotic health concern, is also an expectation of this position. Dissemination of this information at professional meetings and through publications, and other venues is also expected.

Education and Experience:

A DVM, or DVM-equivalent, degree, obtained at a school or college of veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Education is required. Graduates of schools that are not accredited by the AVMA Council on Education must meet one of the following requirements: a) Proof of certification of their final transcript by the Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG); b) Possession of a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice veterinary medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States that includes successful completion of the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE) or its predecessors, the National Board Examination (NBE) and the Clinical Competency Test (CCT); OR c) Proof that the education obtained is equivalent to that gained in a veterinary medical program that is accredited by the AVMA Council on Education. An AVMA-accredited veterinary medical school or college must have accepted the final transcript from the foreign veterinary medical school at full value for placement into an advanced degree, postgraduate educational program, or training program (e.g., residency or graduate program).

American College of Veterinary Pathologists Board certification (ACVP or ECVP anatomic), or eligibility for certification, is strongly preferred, although applicants with advanced degrees (MSc/PhD) will also be considered. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to engage professionally with a diverse population of clients, faculty, staff, students, and others across the university and community are required. Veterinary practice experience, and/or familiarity with agricultural livestock production systems is considered a significant asset.
