Veterinary Assistant I, two positions available

The University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine, invites applications for the position of Veterinary Assistant I. The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of functions within the Equine, Farm Animal, and Equine Performance Rehabilitation Hospitals such as general care, feeding, cleaning, restraint.

Perform cleaning and sanitizing in all areas (animal stalls, equipment and treatment areas) of the hospital and farm as SOP's describe and according to IACUC, USDA and AALAC protocols. Assists with patient treatment as needed with Equine including exercising of equine patients and in FA which includes tabling of bulls and discharge (movement of cattle). Works with student assistants overseeing their work. Maintain accurate animal and sanitation records and records daily observations.

Operates equipment. Assists with admittance and discharge of patients. Transport animals as needed, assist in moving animals to designated areas as needed.

Learn over all working knowledge of the Large Animal Teaching Hospital and VREC. Do laundry for Large Animal hospital, fold and put away. The position work schedule will include Saturday and Sunday day shift as part of work week schedule and includes evening shift as needed. This is a floating position and requires ability to work in all areas of the hospital.

Typical Responsibilities:

Provides assistance to veterinary technicians, clinicians and students. Feeds equine patients and offers water.

Prepares stalls for new patients and assists with patient treatments. Adds sufficient amount of bedding to occupied stalls. Assists with restraint and transportation of patients for treatments and procedures.

Records daily observations. Reports any problems as necessary. Proper disposal of dead animals.

Must be able to follow instructions and work independently. Assists as needed in all areas of the hospital. Assist in teaching labs in the hospital as needed as duties in hospital permit.

Assist clients with the loading and unloading of animals, maintaining equine and farm animal loading area. Set up specialty stalls (sand-padded) after surgery for recovery.

Disinfects and maintains all areas of the Large Animal Hospital (including Isolation in accordance to the isolation and biosecurity protocols) by cleaning stalls, sweeping hallways and exam rooms, washing and scrubbing hallways and exam rooms keeps loading area organized and clean. Cleans all equipment.

Performs laundry pickup and drop off. Orders and restocks supplies. Removes clutter and debris. Maintains and stocks supplies.

Trains and instructs new employees and UT student assistants to work safely in the equine and farm animal hospitals. Completes daily census.

Reports to the proper person if any abnormal concerns regarding patients. Transports animals from the Vet Hospital to VREC, transport dead animals, and assists with after-hours labs.

Reports any maintenance needs to the manager. Provides general maintenance of gates, chutes and equipment. Stocks hay, straw, bedding in all areas of the hospital (Equine, Farm Animal and Equine Performance and Rehab). Makes sure the forklift is plugged in at night.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent. This is an entry-level position.

Must be at least 18 years of age. Must have a valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:

6 months of experience or more working with horses in a veterinary setting.

The primary purpose of this position is to provide nursing care in a variety of service areas by making patient assessments, preparing patients for exams or treatments, and assisting faculty and staff to achieve clinic goals. The rotating veterinary technician position serves to ensure coverage of hospital services during the weekends and part of the weekday. Position helps with performing diagnostic tests and analyzing results and records patients' medical histories and symptoms, including observations. Position administers medicine and treatments, establishes plan of care, and operates medical equipment. Position supports teaching efforts by instructing students, interns, and residents. This position may be asked to provide compensated emergency technical support when needed. Depending on the qualifications of the successful candidate, this position may begin at the Veterinary Technician I or II level. Typical Responsibilities: Provides patient care in a variety of services (medicine, surgery, anesthesia, rehabilitation, field services, farrier, and reproduction) by assessing large animal patients, performing triage, and preparing patients for exams or treatments. Performs diagnostic tests and submits blood work and lab specimens. Records patients' medical histories, symptoms, and observations. Administers medications and treatment. Prepares for surgical procedures, using aseptic and sterile techniques. Helps to establish a plan of care and confers with owner. Regularly communicates with supervising Clinician. Operates and cleans medical and/or surgical equipment such as laparoscopic and arthroscopic machines, endoscopes, ultrasound machines, etc. Operates and maintains heavy equipment such as stocks, chutes, etc. Collaborates with others to ensure quality patient care is received. Enters charges on patient accounts. Manages supplies, equipment, and inventory. Organizes products, maintains equipment, and orders supplies. Supports teaching efforts by instructing students, interns, and residents. Supports research efforts by teaching in laboratories and non-clinical settings when time allows. Must be able to demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, work ethic, collegiality, and willingness to help at all times. Minimum Qualifications: Must be a graduate of an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program in Veterinary Technology. Must hold a Veterinary Technician license and obtain a Tennessee license within one year of employment. Preferred Qualifications: Six months of experience in a veterinary medical center or 1 year of experience in private practice. Experience working with large animals especially horses, cattle, and small ruminants. Candidate should preferably have experience or strong desire to learn to work with diverse people and species including horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, llamas, alpacas, and others.
