Veterinarian, Shelter Medicine & Community Outreach

This position is dedicated to serving both the Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine of Rowan University and the wider NJ communities through the provision of high quality, high volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) services, community engagement and outreach through our mobile HQHVSN clinic, and the instruction of both veterinary and veterinary technician students. This position includes both clinical service and teaching responsibilities in HQHVSN, low-cost community outreach practice, and the SSVM shelter medicine program. The shelter veterinarian will provide and manage comprehensive care to patients from both the area shelter populations and privately-owned animals and uphold high medical standards of care to ensure a safe, healthy environment for patients and the people who interact with them. The shelter veterinarian must have demonstrated expertise in the medical and surgical management of shelter animals and patients through the low-cost public outreach mobile and stationary clinics. Members of the service are responsible for providing veterinary oversight for the shelter medicine program and both didactic and clinical teaching responsibilities for veterinary technician students and veterinary students will be an integral part of this role as the program grows. This is a clinical-track (non-tenure) track faculty position at the Instructor, Assistant, or Associate Clinical Professor level, commensurate with the experience of the applicant.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Performs in-house animal health inspections with shelter staff as needed.

  • Provides preventative treatments for infections, disease prevention and control, general health, parasite diagnosis and treatment and dietary evaluations in accordance with developed shelter medicine protocols.

  • Examines shelter-resident and privately-owned animals, evaluates animals' health, and performs veterinary medical and surgical procedures including vaccinations, prescribing, and administering of medications, anti-parasite treatments, orders and interprets diagnostic tests.

  • Performs high-quality, high-volume spay and neuter surgeries in stationary and mobile clinics and other types of surgery as needed.

  • Maintains medical records and drug-use logs and assists staff in developing and implementing certain medical-related policies and procedures to veterinary and sheltering practice standards.

  • Ensures that all state and federal laws, state regulations, accepted standards, the practice of veterinary medicine, drug control, and animal care and handling are adhered to.

  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of shelter animal health protocols, surgical procedures (including dog, cat, and rabbit ovariohysterectomy and castration and dental preventative care) and other companion animal health issues.

  • Delivers didactic content for veterinary technology and veterinary medical students and supervises student clinical surgical and medical experiences through clinical clerkships via stationary and mobile clinical facilities.

The selected candidate(s) must have:

  • DVM or equivalent degree from an AVMA-accredited institution.

  • Current, active New Jersey Veterinary Licensure (or obtained prior to starting position).

  • USDA level II accreditation (or obtained within 6 months of hire).

  • Federal DEA registration and NJ CDS Permit.

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in shelter medicine, HQHVSN, animal shelter operations, community engagement, medical and surgical care of small animal patient services, or any equivalent combination of related training and experience.

  • Valid NJ Driver's License.

  • Preference given to candidates with board certification(s), specialization, and extensive experience in shelter medicine, veterinary forensics, animal behavior or high-volume, high-quality spay and neuter services. Commensurate with experience and credentials of the well-qualified applicant, this faculty position could be offered at the Clinical Instructor, Clinical Assistant Professor or Clinical Associate Professor rank.

The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine plans to admit its first class of DVM students in 2025, pending accreditation approval. Facilities will include an academic teaching facility aimed at the delivery of pre-clinical training, a small animal teaching hospital, and a research facility.
