GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under direction, provides routine care and treatment to animals, examines animals for diseases and illnesses, and provides recommendations for care. Performs routine examinations and evaluates animals' temperaments, recommends quarantine or further testing as necessary. Administers rabies vaccination, performs euthanasia activities, and maintains records of drugs dispensed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides routine care and treatment of animals.

Examines animals for diseases and illnesses and provides care recommendations.

Performs routine examinations and evaluates animals' temperaments.

Recommends quarantine or further testing as necessary.

Administers all vaccinations.

Performs euthanasia activities.

Maintains records of drugs dispensed.

Performs forensic veterinary exams for cruelty and legal cases.

Educates staff on veterinary issues.

Attends off-site vaccine clinics on behalf of the department.

Operates an automobile to perform assigned job functions.

Performs related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Education and Experience:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree (D.V.M. or V.M.D.) from an accredited college of veterinary medicine

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Experience working in an animal shelter

Required Licenses or Certifications:

  • Possession of a current Veterinarian license from the State of Michigan

  • Possession of a State and Federal Controlled Substance License

  • Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license and operable, insured automobile for authorized travel

  • Effectively speak, write, and understand a language other than English is preferred
