Position Overview:

Under the supervision of the Chief of Veterinary Operations, the Wellness Veterinarian provides quality preventative veterinary care and sterilization surgeries for publicly owned dogs and cats. These duties will be performed at the Harris County Pets Wellness Clinic and through mobile services throughout Harris County.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provides quality preventative medicine to the community
  • Performs sterilization surgeries to publicly owned dogs and cats.
  • Educates clients about the value of preventative care such as vaccinations, heart worm, internal and external parasite prevention.
  • Vaccinates pets against rabies and other disease, implants microchips and performs other veterinary medical procedures.
  • Provides excellent customer service and care to clients and their pets.
  • Works and communicates with other veterinarians and technicians to provide the best medical care possible.

Requirements

Education:

  • DVM/VMD or equivalent degree from an AVMA accredited School of Veterinary Medicine or will graduate from an accredited school of Veterinary Medicine with a doctorate degree in Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M./V.M.D.) by hire date.

Licenses:

  • Valid license to practice veterinary medicine issued by the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners or the ability to obtain a valid veterinary license issued by the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners by the hire date.

Experience:

  • At least six (6) months surgical experience in spaying and neutering of dogs and cats.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles & practices of immunization as related to infectious diseases of animals and zoonotic diseases, effective personnel management & a pragmatic approach to resolution of problems
  • Must have knowledge in the practice of veterinary medicine.
  • Must have the surgical skills necessary to spay/neuter all ages (including pediatric) & sizes of dogs & cats.
  • Knowledge of Chameleon shelter software and Avimark.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal & written).
  • Must use your personal mobile device for our Multifactor Authentication process.

General Information

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:

  • This is a full-time position. Working 40 hours per week.
  • This position will have a rotating schedule which includes some weekends.

Work Environment:

  • This job operates in an animal clinic, animal shelter, mobile unit and professional office environment. Consistently exposed to animals and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternative available. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines as well as medical equipment.

Physical Demands:

  • Persons in these positions frequently lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing up to 10 lbs. They also occasionally move objects weighing up to 20 lbs., and sometimes, but rarely, up to 50 lbs.
