DEPARTMANT OF ANIMAL SERVICES (DAS)

The Department of Animal Services seeks candidates for Veterinarian in an Animal Shelter facility, currently located at Carlsbad and Bonita. Incumbents will provide leadership and direction for the medical and surgical care of shelter animals.

The incumbent will triage a diverse caseload, diagnose a wide variety of medical conditions, develop treatment plans, communicate efforts for the containment of contagious diseases, oversee the distribution and use of controlled drugs and ensure all veterinary work is performed in accordance with State law, County policies and best practices. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, conducting exams, providing routine care, performing surgical procedures, maintaining thorough medical records, advising and training staff, being a liaison with veterinary community partners, managing supply inventory, assisting with the documentation of animal cruelty cases and working in partnership with the Animal Medical Operations Manager (AMOM) to operate within budgetary guidelines while maximizing care and treatment of animals.

  • UPCOMING* DAS Veterinarians will have an opportunity to be a part of a mobile surgical unit to provide spay/neuter and basic wellness services to targeted communities. Initial mobile unit outreach based on current shelter intake will offer targeted services in the Spring Valley, Lakeside, Ramona, and Fallbrook communities, with additional areas to be added as needed. Each shelter has a medical division that consist of Veterinarians and Registered Veterinary Technicians who provide medical and surgical services, including high-quality high-volume, for the animals within the Department's care. In additional to providing quality care to the injured, sick and homeless animals, the Department promotes a partnership with the community, offers education, encourages adoption of shelter animals and provides enforcement of animal related laws. HIRING TIMELINE AND DATES:

The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below.

  • Job Offer and Background Process begins shortly after the interviews.

  • Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.

  • Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A degree in veterinary medicine from an accredited university of veterinary medicine ANDtwo (2) years of experience in veterinary medicine PLUS
  • A valid license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of California, which will be maintained throughout employment in this class, is required at the time of appointment AND
  • Possess or be able to obtain a Drug Enforcement Agency (D.E.A.) controlled substance registration.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

As part of the County of San Diego's pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position.

The names of qualified candidates will be placed on a six(6)month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment application and supplemental questionnaire.
