The Veterans Services Claims Office is charged with providing assistance to Veterans and their dependents, to obtain the appropriate benefits due to them, before the Department of Veteran Affairs. Assistance is offered and provided throughout the process of the claim, to include the appeal process. Additionally, the incumbent will be responsible for conducting community outreach to ensure that Harris County Veterans are educated on their Veterans Administration (VA) Benefits.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Informs veterans of the rights and benefits to which they are entitled and answering questions related to them.
Completes and files applications for claimants, to include those who are homebound, by conducting in-home visits.
Handles all appeals on behalf of veterans with Department of Veterans Affairs.
Attends weekly management meetings.
Attends monthly meetings at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Attends quarterly County Service Officer meetings for the Houston region.
Attends bi-annual training of the Texas Veterans Commission for County Service Officers.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Bachelor's Degree in Human Services, Social Work, Communications, or a related field; and
Three (3) years of professional experience in an office environment related to Veteran issues, benefits, and care
Certified by the Texas Veterans Commission
Currently approved by the Department of Veteran Affairs to file claims on behalf of Veterans
Must have knowledge of Veteran claims process, appeals, medical benefits, burial, education as well as other federal, state and local benefits
Outgoing personality and positive "can do" attitude, with the ability to effectively communicate both verbally and written
Ability to use a personal computer, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), and the internet
Valid driver's license, Texas by Hire Date
Office setting with occasional required travel to training events or meetings
Some routine travel within Harris County
