Veteran Youth Corps
Founded in 2008, Leave No Veteran Behind invests in Veterans to build better communities through employment training, transitional jobs, and its Veteran educational debt relief scholarship. The organization proudly serves heroes who have served their country honorably and who seek to continue their service as assets in communities across America.
LNVB Veteran Youth Corps AmeriCorps Members will be trained in Civilian Emergency Response Training (CERT), CPR/First Aid, Peer Support, Diversity Awareness, Civic Engagement, and community-based safety planning to teach already-fatigued community members in high crime neighborhoods how to prepare and respond in specific man-made or natural emergencies using evidence-based resilience toolkits. VYC AmeriCorps members will focus on community resilience, disaster planning as well as community development. By the end of the program year, the AmeriCorps members will improve community resilience as well as work to develop positive relationships with first responders in the community (i.e. local police and fire/paramedics, etc.). Further help on this page can be found by clicking here.
Member Duties : VYC AmeriCorps members will work to engage five South Side communities: Auburn Gresham, Bronzeville, Englewood/ West Englewood, South Shore, and Woodland.
Eight VYC members will help community members to prepare for and respond to man-made or natural incidents. VYC AmeriCorps members will each spend their 675 hours over the course of the year being trained and working with community members in South Side Communities to assess their Disaster Preparedness, help community members create customized Personal and Family Safety Plans, and train more community members using the evidence-based Rand community resilience toolkits "Learn & Tell" (for adults) and "The Hungrier Games: Disaster Resilience Skills for Youth" (for teens and young adults) to help them become prepared for and respond appropriately to man-made or natural disasters.
