Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students. Located in Richlands, Virginia, SWCC offers associate's degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university. SWCC also has associate degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography and Administration of Justice.
The Veteran Support Specialist works with veteran clients who are seeking educational and training experiences leading to initial employment or career advancement. The Veteran Support Specialist provides guidance and preparation on job search and career readiness. They suggest scholastic goals and career opportunities and help with skills development and problem-solving.
The Veteran Support Specialist will serve a dual role with Veterans Upward Bound including general office management to include oversight of student records, program related data and inventory. Additionally, the veteran support specialist will play an active role in designing and implementing recruitment activities, program services and program-related public events. Routine activities for the veteran support specialist include:
Collaborates with staff to plan community recruitment initiatives targeting veterans;
Processes all purchase requisitions using the Shared Services Center;
Processes travel following state guidelines in Chrome River;
Reconciles inventory to the associated purchase requisitions;
Maintains physical records and guarantees security following college guidelines; Manages logistics of workshops offered at SWCC and partner colleges;
Creates relevant content for the VUB social media applications;
Assists in maintaining and updating VUB webpage;
Assists in managing the VUB Canvas shell for mass communication and information sharing;
Assists with reconciling purchase requisitions and travel within the AIS system and the grants office budget reports;
Maintains Excel spreadsheets to track academic progress, current and cumulative GPAs, and program participation in Blumen;
Maintains an existing community resources booklet of services tailored to veterans' needs;
Designs brochures tailored to unemployment services and other veteran services;
Completes the career coach certification within the first year of employment;
Participates in pertinent professional development opportunities;
Assist with student tracking required for the annual performance report using Blumen;
Actively participates on committees and sponsored workshops at the host institution;
Supports transition specialists with recruitment activities;
Other duties as assigned by the program director
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
Relevant work experience
Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
Computer literacy;
Experience designing workshops and presentations
Comfortable with public speaking
Additional Considerations
Veteran or prior military experience;
Prior work experience in higher education
Experience working with state and federal grants;
Working knowledge of Navigate, Blumen, eVA, and Chrome River platforms;
Familiarity with Canvas or other learning management systems;
Familiarity with accounting information systems;
Experience using a case management system or student tracking system;
Experience in event planning and logistics
Strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Suite and other IT platforms;
Experience maintaining a social media presence;
Willingness to travel with overnight stays for meetings and required trainings;
Skilled with spreadsheet management, budget reconciliation and student tracking;
Operation of a State Vehicle No Supervises Employees No Required Travel
Some travel may be required
