This posting is for two positions (60024697 and 60024704).This position is skilled mechanic work. Employees perform a range of progressively responsible tasks involving service, repair, rebuild, and diagnosis of mechanical systems of gasoline/diesel powered automotive and heavy equipment. Employees may perform mechanical work at various levels.
Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical system. This position will function as an Advanced level mechanic at the Division Equipment Shop located in Mecklenburg County. Must be able to perform skilled mechanic work on systems; preventive maintenance; brakes; steering; tires & tubes; wheels, rims, & hubs; transmission (auto); charging system; cranking system; ignition system; lighting system; cooling system; exhaust system; fuel system; power unit; hydraulics; air conditioning; instruments and gauges; air intake system; suspension; transmission (manual); axle driven rear and axle front (non-driven).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Experience in two of the following; ARC, MIG, and TIG welding
Experience in performing electrical/ electronic diagnostics and repair of complex wiring on two of the following; light, medium, heavy duty trucks and heavy equipment
Experience in performing hydraulic system diagnostics, repairs, and rebuilds on a variety of equipment
Experience in troubleshooting and repair of a minimum of two of the following; light, medium, heavy duty or farm equipment brake components
Experience in troubleshooting and diagnostics using software, tools and equipment for automotive and heavy equipment
Ability to repair and maintain automotive and heavy equipment, and diagnose problems using diagnostic equipment, prepare paperwork essential to employment and equipment repair. Ability to understand both written and oral instructions, move parts and material necessary to repair and maintain equipment.
Ability to read schematics, diagrams, and sketches and possesses the physical strength to move relatively heavy objects. Ability to read maps, and to identify components (Engine, air compressor, differential, and etc). Ability to safely operate equipment for testing purposes. Ability to work indoor and outdoor environment.
Note: Employee is required to furnish a complete set of mechanic tools. Must be in possession of valid Class "A" CDL with "N" endorsement within 60 days of employment, steel toed shoes are required. Pre-employment testing is required. As a condition of employment, a signed background statement allowing the NC DOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. "Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NC DOT drug testing and Post offer employment evaluation." Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three (3) years of experience in the area of assignment, or a sufficient year- for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
