Description of Work

Salary Grade: GN06 / Salary Range: $31,200 - $48,058.00

This is a Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technician (VERT) I in the Avery County Equipment Shop located within Division Eleven. This employee performs semi-skilled small engine, automotive and heavy equipment mechanic work.

Performs a wide range of progressively responsible tasks involving service, inspection, repair, rebuild & diagnosis of a diverse number of mechanical systems for variety of gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered engines/equipment. Work ranges from inspection and service to highly complex mechanical systems analysis using advanced diagnostic instruments and software; may include conducting parts/systems failure analysis & calibration; adjustment and operation of engine analyzers. Work requires skilled experience in welding and steel fabrication/machining.

Safety toe shoes required. Employee is required to furnish a complete set of mechanics tools. Valid Class "A" CDL with "N" endorsement will be required within 90 days of employment. Release forms (ALCDRG-01, 06 & ALCDRG-07) must be signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances & alcohol testing.

Applicant must meet both the minimum requirements and all posted Knowledge, Skills and Ability requirements to be considered Qualified for the position.

Qualified applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Valid CDL Class "A" with "N" endorsement is required

  • Experience in the repair and replacement of tires

  • Experience in performing preventive maintenance on a minimum of one of the following: light, medium, heavy duty trucks and heavy equipment

  • Skill in the use of at least 2 tools and pieces of equipment used in the equipment shop such as wrenches, sockets, battery charger, hydraulic jacks, loader, forklift, automotive/truck lift, fuel service truck, tire changer, tire balancer, welder, cutting torch, diagnostic equipment, computer, tire jack, tire balance machine, pneumatic wrench, diagnostic gauges, electronic tester, air impact wrench, air compressor, air gun, torque wrench

Additional Expectations:

Position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays. Ability to perform duties of position in accordance with all safety regulations; prepare and maintain paperwork essential to employment, equipment repair, inventory, and service records; understand both written and oral instructions; move parts and material necessary to repair and maintain equipment; and safely operate equipment for testing purposes.

Ability to demonstrate commitment to provide safe working environment by leading by example. Ability to read and interpret Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals. Person hired into this position will work in both indoor and outdoor environments and will need to be able to move relatively heavy objects.

Release forms ALCDRG-01 and background statement ALCDRG-06 must be completed and signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol. Safety toe shoes required. Ability to operate forklift and pick-up truck as needed.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications

May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.

Some positions in this class may perform skilled work in the straightening and replacing automotive bodies, fenders, panels and related parts. Vehicle body work is performed in accordance with standard automotive body repair practices. Positions must routinely determine materials, techniques and tools to accomplish work assignments. Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical system and ancillary components/equipment. Employees in this classification perform a variety of recurring and non-recurring work such as electrical, suspension, brake system repair, and /or fitting and repairing more complex ancillary and specialized equipment. The extent of repair work to be done may require consultation with a higher level technician or a supervisor.
