Description of Work
Salary Grade GN06 - Recruitment Range: $31,200 - $45,420
This position will function as a VERT I level mechanic at the Shelby Equipment shop in Cleveland County. Employee will perform a range of progressively responsible tasks involving service, repair, rebuild and diagnosis of mechanical systems of gasoline/diesel powered automotive and heavy equipment.
Employee may perform mechanical work at various levels. Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical system. Ability to perform skilled mechanic work on systems: preventative maintenance, brakes, steering, tires and tubes, wheels, rims and hubs, transmission (auto), hydraulics, air conditioning, instruments and gauges and air intake systems.
Employee will perform the job duty of driving and operating fuel truck. Employee will be responsible for the repair and replacement of tires. Work will be performed in both indoor and outdoor environments.
Employee is required to furnish a complete set of mechanic tools. Must obtain NC Class "A" CDL with "N" endorsement within 90 days of employment or employment will be terminated. (Permit within 60 calendar days). Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Steel toe safety shoes are required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Qualified applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
Valid CDL Class "A" with "N" endorsement is required
Experience in the repair and replacement of tires
Experience in performing preventive maintenance on a minimum of one of the following; light, medium, heavy duty trucks and heavy equipment
Skill in the use of at least 2 tools and pieces of equipment used in the equipment shop such as wrenches, sockets, battery charger, hydraulic jacks, loader, fork lift, automotive/truck lift, fuel service truck, tire changer, tire balancer, welder, cutting torch, diagnostic equipment, computer, tire jack, tire balance machine, pneumatic wrench, diagnostic gauges, electronic tester, air impact wrench, air compressor, air gun, torque wrench
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
