The Vehicle Driver operates and maintains the motor vehicles on location, transporting cargo and passengers on short and long-distance trips. This includes transporting the food carts to the units promptly and in a sanitary manner to the correct location.

Assumes the duties of a food service worker when short staffed or assigned. Has no supervisory or financial responsibilities but is accountable for assigned vehicles, preparing and maintaining forms or records pertaining to vehicle operations and ensuring vehicles are scheduled for general maintenance. This person works under the general supervision of the assigned Food Service Manager.

Essential Job Functions:

Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

Operates motor vehicles such as vans and trucks and transports passengers, cargo, and food carts. Physical requirements of long standing, carrying, pushing and lifting of items more than 40 lbs. Able to drive state vehicle with delivery trailer attached.

Prepares and maintains records and logs related to vehicle operations. Ability to understand and to comply with written and oral instructions. Has ability to do simple mathematic calculation.

Performs basic vehicle maintenance, makes minor repairs, and fuels vehicles. Accomplishes daily operator maintenance before, during and after each trip as evidenced by no reports from motor pool showing maintenance problems.

Ensures that vehicle cargo/food cart capacity is not exceeded, driver and passengers use safety restraints, and cargo/food carts are distributed to reduce maximum axle loading.

Secures and protects cargo/food carts. Complies with state and local traffic laws as evidenced by no citations.

Assists in the safe loading and unloading of passengers, cargo/food carts.

Operates vehicle power lift gates, manual hydraulic forklifts, and dollies.

Assists in performing warehouse and food server work. Knowledge of general cooking, food handling, and serving techniques. Ability to use chemicals and commercial detergent for dishwashers, floor, etc. relating to food services/housekeeping operation.

Performs other duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.

Knowledge Skills Abilities:

Ability to tell time and work on a schedule.

Knowledge and understanding of traffic safety regulations is required.

Skill to maneuver large trucks into tight areas safely is needed.

Ability to communicate with others in a cooperative and positive manner.

Ability to work in a physically challenging environment.

Ability to tolerate cold and hot weather conditions.

Registration or Licensure Requirements:

Must possess valid Texas driver's license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out-of-state driver's license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.

Texas Department of Public Safety Commercial Driver's License preferred.

Food Handlers certification is preferred. Initial Selection Criteria:

Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is generally preferred.

Any prior work experience operating a motor vehicle with multiple passengers and/or transporting cargo is required; Six (6) months is preferred.

Additional Information:

Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct and HHS OIG List of Excluded Individuals/Entities. Males between the ages of 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service.

All State Supported Living Center Employees are subject to Random Drug Testing.

Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours. Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
