FOR A LIMITED TIME - *RECRUITMENT INCENTIVE: For applicants that do not posses a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), the City of Rio Rancho will pay for all costs associated with obtaining a CDL necessary for this position.

The Vehicle and Equipment Mechanic is responsible for the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel powered City automobiles, light trucks, and vehicular equipment using industry-standard repair criteria. If assigned to the Streets & Right-of-Way Division, may also be responsible for repair and maintenance of other equipment such as motor graders, loaders, and tractors.
Mechanic (C) II positions are differentiated from Mechanic (D) II by levels of repair and required certifications. This position requires a Commercial Driver's License and falls under the Department of Transportation, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Rules and Regulations, as differentiated from a Vehicle & Equipment Mechanic (D)-II, which requires a Class D Driver's License.
This is a Safety Sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.
Education / higher education: High School Graduate or equivalent
Minimum number of years of directly related experience: Three (3) years of directly related work experience.
Education and/or experience preferences: Training in the repair of gasoline and diesel vehicles.
Driver's License requirement: Commercial Driver's License Required Endorsements: Class B with Tanker endorsement
Note -- For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.
Required certifications, licenses or registrations: Commercial Driver's License and Class B with Tanker Endorsement.
Time given after hire/promotion to obtain certification or licenses: Six (6) months.
For exceptional reasons, management may authorize an extension of no more than 6 additional months (not to exceed 12 months from the date of hire) for the incumbent to obtain the required CDL license. Preferred certifications, licenses or registrations: At least one (1) ASE Certification.
Knowledge: Gasoline and diesel engine repair and maintenance Policies and procedures related to safety including occupational hazards and safety precautions. Operational requirements and safety practices associated with the tools and equipment of the trade.
Skills: The use of tools and equipment used in engine repair and maintenance.
Abilities: Establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, employees, other departments and the public.
Safely operate City vehicles, equipment and tools. Express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing. Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
To carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Write routine reports and correspondence. To use math concepts to contribute data for charts, graphs, and presentations.
Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Internal: This position communicates with the supervisor or administrative assistant for administrative, technical, and parts assistance.
Employee communicates with City employee customers to assess vehicle and equipment repairs. Employee maintains professional relationships while fostering a collaborative team environment. External: This position communicates with vendors to secure parts and materials in a timely manner. Employee presents a professional, courteous image for the City to the general public, customers, and public officials.
