VDC Specialist/ VDC Manager

A VDC Specialist / Manager serves as the Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) Champion for their local office or area. As such they are expected to take a leadership role in local VDC implementation efforts. This includes directly supporting pursuits and projects, assisting in the development and implementation of VDC guidelines and standards, as well as initiating and supporting VDC initiatives. At Skanska, we refer to VDC as the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) processes to enhance construction.

The VDC Specialist / Manager is a member of the local operations organization and will report to the local Operations Manager. In addition, the VDC director will receive technical guidance, support and mentoring from their local VDC Regional Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

VDC Specialist / Managers serve a dual role as local VDC leaders, while providing direct support to project teams in their local region. This role incorporates the following responsibilities:

  • Manage on-site construction team efforts in the implementation of VDC applications and the deployment of technology to support operational excellence.

  • Support Project Execution Planning by ensuring that assisting developing VDC plans for project teams that meet any VDC related requirements in the owner contract, such as "As-Built Models" and COBie deliverables. Work with AMs and Project Executives to develop budgets to support owner requirements related to BIM/VDC.

  • Support the Bid and Proposal process by ensuring relevant subcontracts adequately specify requirements related to VDC (i.e. MEP subcontractor submitting models, participating in 3-D coordination meetings, etc.) Evaluate subcontractor capabilities to meet BIM-related scope.

  • Support construction operations by leading, or mentoring project personnel to lead the trade coordination process utilizing BIM. Regularly review subcontractor BIM coordination schedules for compliance with the overall project schedule. Communicate performance metrics, such a volume of conflicts identified and resolved and status of subcontractor shop drawings.

  • Provide assistance to local Marketing and Business Development efforts by developing local success stories and defining the value created from BIM/VDC for use in proposals.

  • Lead the local implementation of VDC applications and tools, such including Trade Coordination with Navisworks, Field Reporting with BIM 360 Field and model management with BIM 360 Glue.

  • Mentor, oversee and/or supervise project team members using VDC on other projects which the VDC Specialist / Manager does not serve directly. A VDC Manager may have local VDC Specialists as direct reports.

  • Participate in the USB VDC Manager Network, to share best practices and develop BIM/VDC standards, processes and related guidelines.

  • Continually develop their BIM/VDC skills. In order to remain abreast of rapidly evolving VDC industry trends, VDC Managers are expected to spend up to 10 days each year in VDC-related development activities. Examples of these activities include taking part in Skanska VDC All-Hands conferences; attending industry events such as Autodesk University; or attending VDC software or hardware-related training courses.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent) in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management or a related field

  • Have a minimum of 2 years of experience with VDC in construction

  • Personnel management experience preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to manage VDC aspects of one or more projects

Skills / Competencies

  • Proficient in BIM authoring with Autodesk Revit Architecture, Structure and MEP. Experience with other authoring platforms such as ArchiCAD, Tekla, AutoCAD, Microstation, Autodesk Fabrication, Autodesk Inventor, CAD-Duct and related tools is desirable.

  • Highly proficiency in Autodesk Navisworks for construction analyses such as coordination and clash prevention, quantity takeoff and 4D simulation is required. Experience with other BIM analysis and construction management tools such as Autodesk BIM 360 Glue and Field, Synchro, Solibri, Tekla CM, etc., is also desirable.

  • Able to read drawings, specifications, building codes, and other technical product and material specifications, as well as interpret and manage VDC contractual obligations and responsibilities.

  • A thorough understanding of common building systems as well as related means and methods.

  • Expertise with construction coordination processes is strongly preferred

  • Must be a self-motivated individual who works well with multidisciplinary teams in deadline-driven environment

  • Good communication skills
