Job Summary

The Vascular Access Nurse is a registered nurse who specializes in the care and placement of vascular access devices. This role will be responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care of patients requiring vascular access procedures. This role requires a strong understanding of vascular access devices, such as midlines catheters, peripheral IVs, central venous catheters, peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs), etc. The ideal candidate will possess excellent clinical skills, critical thinking abilities, and a commitment to providing high-quality patient care.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Utilizes the ANA Vascular Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice (current edition), the Infusion Nurses Society Standards of Care and the Association of Vascular Access resources to perform thorough assessments of patients to determine the most appropriate vascular access device for their specific needs.

  • Insert and manage various vascular access devices, including ultrasound guided peripheral IVs, midline catheters, central venous catheters, PICCs, other vascular access devices, following established protocols and guidelines.

  • Assist to monitor and maintain the patency and integrity of vascular access devices, including assessing for complications such as infection, thrombosis, and infiltration. Evaluates progress toward attainment of intravenous therapy outcomes.

  • Health teaching - assist to educate patients and their families about vascular access devices, including proper care and maintenance to minimize complications and promote patient autonomy.

  • Collaborate with other members of the healthcare team, including patients and their families, physicians, nurses, and technicians, to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care for patients requiring vascular access.

  • Participate in quality assurance and improvement initiatives related to vascular access procedures, including data collection, analysis, and implementation of best practices. Continuously seeks opportunities for innovation and creative problem solving to improve the quality of patient care delivery.

  • Stay up-to-date on the latest evidence-based practices and guidelines related to vascular access, and incorporate new knowledge into clinical practice.

  • Provide education, support and guidance to nursing staff regarding vascular access procedures and best practices.

  • Maintain accurate and complete documentation of all vascular access procedures, assessments, and interventions in accordance with regulatory requirements and organizational policies and applicable regulatory requirements.

  • Adhere to infection control practices and protocols to minimize the risk of healthcare-associated infections related to vascular access procedures.

  • Attains knowledge and competency on an ongoing basis that reflects current nursing practice relative to vascular access and intravenous therapy.

  • Provides leadership in the professional practice setting and the profession of nursing and vascular access.

  • Practices in an environmentally safe and healthy manner.

  • Supports the purpose, vision, and values of Monument Health.

  • Practices within the legal scope of a Registered Nurse as outlined by the state in which employment occurs and delivers competent care consistent with standards/policies, laws, regulators/accreditation/certifying organizations. Abides by the Code of Ethics for Nurses (current edition).

  • All other duties as assigned.

Additional Requirements

Required:

Education

  • Completion of a nursing education program that is approved by a board of nursing

Certification

  • Registered Nurse (RN) - South Dakota Board of Nursing

Experience

  • 3+ years of Acute Experience; 3+ years of Registered Nurse Experience

Preferred:

Education

  • Bachelors degree in Nursing

Certification

  • Vascular Access Certification (VA-BC)

  • Vascular Access Certification Corporation (VACC)

Experience

  • 1+ years of Critical Care experience

Physical Requirements: Medium work

  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Possible exposure to radiation and frequent exposure to contaminated needles and infectious body substances. Requires the ability to work designated shift lengths (including 8 and 12 hours), which may include night shifts or occasional irregular hours.
