REPORTS TO: Principal


To plan and carry out an effective educational program that will maximize learning for all students and contribute to their development into confident, competent and creative learners.


  • Valid California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential or appropriate Single Subject Credential.

  • Must hold or be eligible for NCLB Certification of Highly Qualified Teacher status.

  • CLAD/BCLAD/CTEL or equivalent.

  • Bachelor's Degree, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements.

  • Ability to read, write, and speak English. Bilingual Spanish is preferred, but not required.

  • Employment is contingent on satisfactory completion of a criminal background check and negative TB skin test or chest X-ray.

  • Build quality relationships with students.

  • Establish a culture of high expectations that includes standards mastery and high school/college preparation for all students. Prepare students for later grades by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and persevere with challenging tasks.

  • Engage and support all students in learning by using a variety of instructional strategies and resources to respond to students' diverse needs and by engaging students in problem solving and critical thinking skills, using culturally relevant examples. Work towards developing and maintaining cultural competencies.

  • Instruct students in citizenship and character education.

  • Plan, monitor, and design learning experiences for all students that reflect standards-based grade-level curriculum expectations appropriate to the readiness and maturity of the students. Include a variety of instructional strategies and materials, organized in such a way as to maximize student understanding.

  • Prepare and utilize lesson plans, which shall be submitted to the Principal. All materials, including the lesson plans, seating chart, class list, assigned duties and schedules, shall be available to the substitute teacher.

  • Select books, instructional aids, materials and supplies for the classroom, and maintain required inventory records.

  • Assess and document students' academic and social growth regularly in accordance with state guidelines. Examine student assessment data to prepare progress reports and intervention plans consistent with school requirements, and to refine classroom activities to differentiate instruction for each student.

  • Maintain accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, KCNS policy, and administrative regulations, including cumulative records folders, attendance reports, and reports to parents.

  • Build quality relationships with all parents through "back-to-school" events, classroom visitations, home visits, conferences, telephone conversations, written communications and work samples so that parents are aware of their children's school progress and adjustment. Find ways to involve parents in their children's education.

  • Conduct appropriate testing for potential learning disabilities of students on a regular basis and make referrals as required. Collaborate with Special Education service personnel for RTI and to provide instructional services to students with special needs consistent with Individual Education Plans.

  • Create and implement a classroom management plan that includes positive behavior supports needed to achieve an engaging and safe learning atmosphere in the classroom. Assume the primary responsibility for supervision of the behavior of students during the entire school day.

  • Make referrals to Counselor, Vice-Principal or Principal for pupils who demonstrate severe unsocial behavioral patterns.

  • Carry out assigned pupil supervision outside classroom such as yard duty, assemblies, athletic events and extracurricular activities and fire and other emergency drills.

  • Assist in general building supervision and discipline of students outside of the classroom.

  • Maintain a neat, clean classroom environment and a professional personal appearance.

  • Collaborate with fellow teachers on planning, professional development, and standards-based curriculum development and common assessment designed to contribute to the continuous improvement of instruction at the school. Share best practices. Participate actively in Professional Learning Community activities, both on-site and off-site.

  • Attend a reasonable number of meetings, parent conferences, and evening school programs that require student supervision.

  • Support school-wide initiatives.

  • Adhere to the standards, policies and practices outlined in the KCNS Employment Handbook and specific Academy/Teacher Handbook.

  • Perform all other obligations mandated by law or KCNS policy, and other reasonable and appropriate tasks assigned by the Administration.

Physical Abilities:

  • Bending at the waist, kneeling, or crouching to assist students.

  • Hearing and speaking clearly to exchange information and make presentations.

  • Seeing to read, prepare and review a variety of activities and to monitor student activities.

  • Lift and carry items up to 20 lbs.

  • Walking and standing for extended periods of time to provide instruction and to escort students around campus.

  • Sitting in order to work at desks or tables.


  • Potential exposure to communicable diseases and contact with blood and other body fluids.

  • Potential exposure to physical injury from aggressive behavior.

King-Chavez Primary Academy (TK-2) is looking for a VAPA Instructor. Summary Under the direction of the Principal, the VAPA Instructor plays a critical role in ensuring that KCPA is abiding by our school's mission statement by providing a forum for students to seek excellence in the arts. In particular, the VAPA Instructor will be responsible for providing TK-2nd grade students with engaging and enriching opportunities to grow in their understanding of various forms of visual and performance art.

The San Diego Unified School District accepts applications for VAPA Arts Education Project substitute teachers on a continuous basis. This pool is for individuals who only wish to substitute and to participate in the VAPA Arts Education Project. The Arts Education Project (AEP) is a centrally managed arts learning delivery model that provides grade-level peer learning community (PLC) release time for classroom teachers. In this model, the Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) office hires, trains and schedules a special group of AEP visiting teachers who each specialize in one or more arts disciplines (dance, music, theatre and visual arts). VAPA schedules multi-disciplinary AEP teams to visit an elementary campus and teach a rotation of arts classes through one grade level in the first half of the day and another grade level in the second half of the day. While their students are receiving arts instruction from AEP visiting teachers, classroom teachers are collaborating outside of the classroom in grade-level PLC groups. AEP serves each grade level of a school either once or twice every 4 weeks, depending on the school's needs. VAPA prepares AEP visiting teachers at monthly trainings with lesson plans written by our expert team of VAPA resource teachers. These lessons are grade specific, standards based, and sequential. VAPA also provides AEP visiting teachers with instructional materials. Applicants must have a valid California teaching credential or a 30 day substitute permit to apply. If you have not applied for a California teaching credential or 30 day permit, please remember that as of January 1, 2017, you must hold a Certificate of Clearance prior to applying for your credential. Examples of Duties Candidate should have the following abilities: * Ability to collaboratively and professionally work in large and small teams with diverse VAPA team members of all disciplines * Punctuality and professionalism * Ability to work with classroom instructional technology (Chromebooks, Google Drive, promethean boards, projectors, doc cams, speakers, etc.) and access online tools. * Ability to communicate efficiently through writing * Ability to travel between locations during the school day. DISCIPLINE SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS AND DUTIES: * MUSIC: * Hear and describe elements of music (rhythm, melody, harmony, form, expression) in selected pieces * Sing in tune in the child range (middle C to an octave and a third above), alone and with recordings * Read and identify pitches and rhythms from a musical staff * Play steady beat and rhythm patterns using body percussion and simple percussion instruments * Demonstrate body movements and simple dances to music * Identify common band and orchestra instruments by sight and aurally DANCE: * Keep a steady beat on a hand drum, while clapping, moving the body, and counting beats and phrases, hear and identify steady beat rhythms in musical selections * Ample fitness, agility, and coordination to demonstrate and perform with exaggeration: range of motion, body and facial expression, and varying energies within movement * Understanding of improvisation and creative thinking as it relates to movement * Ability to assist students with learning dance from video * Ability to produce and direct student work for performance * Ability to learn and teach dances (multicultural and various forms of choreography) * Ability to teach dance making * Identify and describe the dance elements live and in video THEATER * Basic knowledge of the actor's tools (body, including movement; voice, including pitch, projection, volume, articulation; and inspiring imagination) * General knowledge of the stage (facings, directions, blocking, cues, etc.) * Ability to demonstrate and teach acting skills: pantomime, tableau, improvisation, dramatization, mirroring, etc. * Ability to perform with exaggeration and confidence a variety of characters and settings * Ability to teach storyboarding, script and scene writing * Ability to produce and direct student work for performance * Knowledge of and ability to teach theatre games * Ability to build ensemble and establish and environment in which students feel safe to take risks * Ability to develop and teach an actor's warm-up routine VISUAL ART: * Understand, articulate and apply the elements and principals of visual design * Demonstrate basic drawing skills * Perceive and illustrate understanding of light and shadow * Demonstrate basic painting techniques, especially water color and tempera * Choose appropriate tools * Use appropriate brush techniques * Demonstrate basic construction skills including paper and clay * Manage distribution and collection of art materials and tools, clean and storage of works of art in a variety of environments * Pace instruction to produce optimum learning and art products in a limited time period Typical Qualifications General Qualifications * Teaching experience at the elementary level is preferred. * Candidate must have experience, training, or a Bachelor's Degree in one of the VAPA disciplines (dance, music, theater, or visual art).
