Job Summary

Vancouver Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services is currently seeking seasonal workers for the positions of Special Events Staff and Park Attendant. These openings will include part-time day, evening, and weekend hours. The person in this position will perform a variety of duties in facilities services and event support for city sponsored, partnered, and permitted events programmed in parks throughout the City.

Job Details

Events Staff $16.28 - $18.88

  • Dates: 8 to 10 weeks Thursday, Friday and Sunday starting 7/7/24

  • Staff Hours: 20-30 hours per week with varying shift times between Thursday-Sunday

  • Mandatory training dates 6/21-6/22 for all staff

  • Locations: Vancouver Waterfront Park, Columbia Tech Center Park, variety of parks throughout Vancouver

  • Events: Waterfront Concert Series, Movies in the Park Series, Sunday Sounds Concert Series and Vancouver Arts and Music Festival

  • This position reports to the Events Coordinator and Events Specialist and takes direction from Events Leader(s)

Park Attendant/Events Leader $18.42-$22.44

  • Dates: 12-16 weeks with varying shift dates between Monday - Sunday May through September

  • Staff Hours: 20-35 hours per week with varying shift times between Monday-Sunday

  • Locations: Primarily located at Esther Short Park and Vancouver Waterfront Park

  • Events: Variety of permitted events held at Esther Short Park and the Vancouver Waterfront Park. May include festivals, cultural events and walk/runs

Essential Functions:

  • Provide a high level of customer service; project and maintain a positive image on behalf of the City of Vancouver with all those contacted in the course of work

  • Understand and implement City of Vancouver Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department operating principles, policies, and procedures

  • Embrace and support the diverse backgrounds and abilities of all performers, city staff and community members

  • Provide minor first aid as necessary; fill out accident reports

  • Perform other duties as required through assigned program

Qualifications

Position requirements:

  • Must be 18 years or older for Park Attendant and Event Leader

  • Current CPR/First Aid card within 30 days of employment. Offered by City of Vancouver.

  • Work a flexible schedule including, days, evenings and weekends.

  • Successful completion of a background check for applicants 18 and older.

  • Successfully pass employment references.

  • Maintain a professional appearance, adhere to dress code, and provide excellent customer service.

  • Maintain a professional demeanor in stressful or challenging situations.

  • Comply with policies and procedures of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services.

  • Participate in rigorous physical activities that may require heavy lifting and/or long periods of standing/walking.

  • Work in indoor and outdoor settings that may require exposure to weather elements

  • Successfully complete trainings/certification as required by position.

Recommended Qualifications:

  • Relevant work, volunteer, training, or personal experience in similar event programming

  • Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing

  • Ability to listen and carry-out instructions both written and verbal

  • Ability to quickly and effectively respond to emergencies and report all accidents and safety health hazards according to City guidelines

  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with the public, vendors, other city employees

  • Monitor and interact with a large, diverse group of community members while multitasking duties and expectations

Events Staff

  • Assist in set-up, take down and organization of event supplies/equipment (stages, inflatable bandshell and movie screen, canopies, tables and supplies, etc.)

  • Assist in ensuring cleanliness of park (litter pick-up, garbage and recycle bag collections)

  • Assist event vendors with basic needs and information (unloading, loading and assistance with set-up of booth spaces)

  • Display high level of customer service and comfort with interacting with the public during special events

  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with all event vendors, city staff and the public

  • Ability to safely drive and operate city vehicles and equipment

Events Leader

  • Lead and manage the day of event run of show including the set-up and teardown of event and directing Event Staff to complete tasks as necessary

  • Manage the pre-event weekly organization of storage spaces and vehicles to ensure all events supplies and equipment is ready for the upcoming week of events

  • Maintain high level of organization and cleanliness to support a safe and orderly program area

  • Point of contact for questions, comments and concerns from the public, event vendors and performers and addressing concerns or compliance issues when necessary

  • Support administrative functions, including supply and equipment requisitions, accident or behavioral reports

  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with all event vendors, city staff and the public

  • Safely drive and operate city vehicles and equipment

Park Attendant

  • Work independently or alongside other park attendant staff and enforcing park rules and regulations

  • Provide information and assistance to users of facilities; ensure users are aware of all rules and regulations (i.e. turn on electricity and lights, turn off glockenspiel, unlock stage, etc.)

  • Ensure the event is in compliance with all items outlined in signed letter of agreement/event permit contract

  • Ensure the safety of individuals and security of facilities; evaluate and take appropriate action to correct unusual situations including fights, thefts, lost children, overcrowded situations, and behavior problems. Including documentation of situations that arise

  • Assist Event Managers with equipment set-up of equipment included in permit (spider box, ADA cord covers, etc.)

  • Provide guidance and problem solving in the moment to Event Managers and event vendors when compliance issues arise

  • Inspect buildings, facilities, and equipment before and after the event; report damage and needed repairs including graffiti and vandalism

  • Provide minor first aid as necessary; fill out accident reports

  • Safely drive and operate city vehicles and equipment

Physical Requirements

  • Some heavy lifting

  • Working outdoors and exposure to weather elements

This position may be subject to successful completion of a pre-employment reference check, a basic criminal background check, and a driving abstract.
