JOB DESCRIPTION

Purpose Statement:
The job of Van Driver is done for the purpose/s of transporting students over scheduled routes and/or to/from special excursions; ensuring vehicle operation is in a safe operating condition; and ensuring safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from vans.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; administering first aid; and operating district vehicles, fire extinguisher, and two-way radio; skills required to perform single technical tasks with a need to occasionally up grade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: safety practices and procedures; Motor Vehicle Code and Education Code sections applicable to student transportation; city streets and locations; basic vehicle maintenance; emergency evacuation techniques; CPR and basic first aid; perform basic math; interpret written procedures, write routine documents; speak clearly; analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.
ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and /or events; gather and /or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and utilize equipment under a variety of conditions for multiple purposes. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with similar types of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. In working with others, independent problem solving is required to analyze issue s and create action plan s. Problem solving with da ta require s following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific abilities re qui red to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include : communicating with school age riders; setting priorities; and serving as a role mode to students; ability to schedule activities; gather, collate, classify data; use basic job related equipment, work with a diversity of individuals; In working with others, problem solving is required to analyze issues, create plans of action, reach solutions.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized routines; leading, guiding, and /or coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to significantly impact the Organization's services.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking, and 10% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and some hazardous conditions.
