THE POSITION

  • Continuous until filled

Job Summary:

Under close supervision, to perform routine and repetitive manual duties on construction, maintenance setup and repair crews in a department; to observe safety regulations; to perform duties in a higher classification as assigned; and to perform related duties as required.

Hours:

Varies Monday- Thursday, 6:00 am-4:30 pm

(Work hours are based on department needs and are subject to change)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

(These functions are representative and may not be present in all positions in the class. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind related duties and work assignments.)

As a member of a public works maintenance crew, loads and unloads heavy materials or equipment from trucks; digs and fills holes, trenches, and ditches; maintains and repairs streets; operates automatic and manual digging tools; operates motorized equipment such as trucks and skiploaders or other power equipment of comparable size and complexity; services and lubricates motorized equipment; cleans hand tools and work areas; diverts traffic using flags and barricades; cuts down weeds in vacant lots.

As a member of a park maintenance crew, maintains grounds, medians and outdoor landscaped areas including planting, cultivating, trimming, watering and spraying plants, trees, and grass; operates various park maintenance equipment such as sprayers and mowers; makes minor repairs to irrigation systems; diverts traffic using street cones to gain access to medians.

As a member of a building maintenance crew, maintains facilities and buildings including cleaning rugs, walls, floors, rest rooms, and office spaces; performs building repairs and construction work; works irregular shifts as required.

As a member of the Carson Community Center Setup/Custodial crew, maintain facilities including cleaning carpets, walls, floors, restrooms and office spaces. Dust and polish furniture, woodwork and fixtures, vacuum carpets. Order and maintain adequate supplies and equipment. Prepare work schedules and provide work direction and guidance to Maintenance Aides to insure timely completion of all setups and tear downs of Community Center events. Inspect custodial and setup work to assure standards of performance and safety are maintained. Operate a variety of equipment such as vacuum cleaners, buffers, carpet extractors, air lifts, etc. Train Maintenance Aides in safe and proper handling methods. Maintain related records and files. Assist in selection of prospective personnel. Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way to obtain the requisite qualifications to perform the duties of this class is as follows:

Education and/or Experience:

Completion of formal education sufficient to assure the ability to read and write at the level required for successful job performance. Some experience performing basic laboring work. Community Center requires two years of custodial and setup work, one of which must have been in a hotel, banquet, meeting room or trade show facility.

Knowledge of:

  • Tools and methods employed in basic laboring work; basic operation of motorized equipment.

  • Provisions of the California Vehicle Code applying to the operation of vehicles on the highway.

  • Community Center requires proper methods, equipment, terminology and materials used in custodial work and physical setup for meeting room convention, banquet, trade show industry.

  • Health and safety regulations.

  • Cleaning materials and disinfectants used in custodial work.

  • Record-keeping techniques.

Skill and/or Ability to:

  • Learn the operations of the department to which assigned.

  • Use tools and equipment with skill and safety.

  • Learn to read and interpret blueprints.

  • Work from heights.

  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

  • Meet approved minimal physical and medical standards.

  • Demonstrate physical endurance; agility, and strength necessary to perform heavy manual labor.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

License and Certificates:

Possession of a valid California Class III driver's license and must be insurable by the City's Insurance carrier.

  • 3%@60 Formula

Other:

  • Employees pay the full Employee Member Contribution on a pre-tax basis.

Medical Insurance (Eligible Unit Members)

  • The City contracts with CalPERS for medical benefits, which offers employees a choice of various HMOs and PPOs.

  • The City shall pay the required monthly minimum of $143.00 towards the monthly health insurance premium.

  • For unit members who have eight (8) years or more of consecutive service with the City and currently working 1,000 hours or more per fiscal year, the City provides an optional benefits package (medical and vision) and, effective May 26, 2016, the City provides an additional $314.00 per month to be used towards these optional benefits for employee and eligible dependents.

Sick Leave

  • Paid sick leave shall accrue at the rate of one (1) hour for each 30 hours worked to a maximum of 24 hours per year.

  • Unit members shall be entitled to use accrued paid sick time beginning on the 90th day of employment, defined as sick leave accrual and usage.

  • Paid sick leave shall be taken in increments of not less than one (1) hour.

Holiday Pay (Unit members will receive holiday pay only if they are scheduled to work during the pay period in which the holiday falls).

Effective calendar year 2012, unit members will receive five (5) hours of holiday pay for each of the following holidays:

  • New Year's Day

  • Memorial Day

  • Thanksgiving Day

  • Christmas Day.
