JOIN OUR TEAM AS A UTILITY WORKER II!

Pasco County BOCC Water & Wastewater O & M is seeking to hire an applicant experienced in semi-skilled work to varying degrees of skilled work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of water distribution and sewage collection systems. Employees in this class perform a wide variety of manual laboring tasks including the operation of light construction equipment in connection with the construction and maintenance of the water distribution or wastewater collection system.

Essential Job Functions

Participates in the installation, maintenance, or repair of water distribution, sewage collection, or similar systems; including valves and meters. Taps water and sewer lines, flushes fire hydrants, cuts pipes, and operates pumps.

Uses tapping saddles, concrete saws, metal detectors, handsaws, pliers, shovels, and wrenches. Maintains manholes. Operates line-clearing equipment.

Occasionally operates backhoe, trencher, and other types of equipment. Assists in maintaining well stations. Maintains inventory of parts on service truck; drives service truck and operates radio.

Reads blueprints and records work activities. Turns meters on and off. Installs or removes plugs and locks.

Repairs or back-flushes meters. Records meter readings and meter serial numbers. Calibrates meters; discusses water or wastewater service problems with users.

Locates lines and fittings. Maintains area around wells, detention ponds, and treatment plants. Operates tractor mowers and related grounds maintenance equipment.

Loads, transports, and unloads equipment. Performs routine preventative maintenance on equipment. Assists in maintaining and repairing lift station and treatment plant equipment. Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of water distribution, wastewater collection system, plumbing, or irrigation system construction and repair methods.

  • Knowledge of tools, fittings, and equipment used in repairing and maintaining water, wastewater, plumbing, or irrigation systems.

  • Knowledge of water meter installation and repair procedures.

  • Skill in driving a service truck and in operating line clearing equipment, pumps, automotive digging, backfilling, and mowing equipment.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to prepare records of work activities.

  • Ability to read blueprints.

  • Ability to read meters and accurately record readings.

This position includes, but is not limited to the following shifts: 7a.m.

  • 5p.m., 3p.m.

  • 1a.m., and 11p.m.

  • 9a.m.

Minimum Requirements

PHYSICAL SKILLS: Ability to lift and/or move up to 80 pounds and also push or pull heavy objects.

May use a handling device (dolly, cart, etc.) or work with another team member to lift and/or move excessively heavy objects. Ability to frequently bend, climb, stoop, squat, and walk. Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written, and visual communication.

Ability to work outside, occasionally under adverse conditions. Ability to perform strenuous physical labor for extended periods of time.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. Six (6) months of direct experience in water or wastewater field maintenance.

NOTE: Candidates without direct water or wastewater field maintenance experience may be hired as a Utility Worker I (Trainee)at a starting salary of $15.00 hourly. Candidates hired as a Trainee will be promoted to Utility Worker II upon completion of Confined Space Certification, Trenching and Shoring Certification, CPR training and applicable FEMA courses.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a valid Florida driver's license.
