This position is located within Facility Management Service at the Syracuse VA Medical Center in Syracuse, NY.

Work Schedule: Rotating to include all three shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays.

NOTE: Applicants must currently have or must be willing to obtain CFC/EPA certification within 6 months of employment. Fee pertaining the requirements of this certification will paid for by the Syracuse VA Medical Center.


Supports utilities and equipment to include Bulk Oxygen tanks and distribution systems, notrogen, nitrous oxide, vacuum and medical air, domestic hot/cold water, high/low voltage electrical distribution systems, nurse calls, and elevators;
Works on high/low pressure steam distribution operation, maintenance, and repair;
Makes inspection rounds and on the spot emergency repairs;
Maintains all types of equipment including; refrigeration, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, plumbing, steam, domestic water, fire sprinkler, fire alarm including smoke detection, duct detectors, and manual pull stations;
Performs mechanical Maintenance of chiller plant equipment medical gas, oxygen, vacuum systems, and medical air by disassembling, cleaning, or replacing worn parts and reassembling;
Orders and stores an inventory of parts and supplies;
Operates large electrical centrifugal and reciprocating chillers, cooling towers, condenser water pumps, chilled water pumps, and 94 air handling units in all areas of the building;
Performs mechanical and maintenance of Chiller Plant equipment;
Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Description Title/PD#:09020-A

The person in this position works in tiring positions for prolonged periods. Frequently lifts and carries items weighting up to 50 pounds. May occasionally lift heavier items with assistance. Required to work while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) that may include safety shoes, eye protection, hearing protection, various types of gloves, and respirators including Powered Air Purified Respirators (PARP). Equipment rounds require climbing stairs and fixed ladders. There is continuous noise from machinery involved. Work Hazards include the risk of electrical shock, burns from piping, injury to eyes or lungs from refrigerant gases, and exposure risk to infectious diseases. The person in this position is required to wear protective clothing gear while working in a sub-zero freezer or while working on equipment located outdoors.

Experience must have included programming of programmable logic controllers (PLC's). * Degree or college credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the NYS Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. Stand-by and overtime availability is required and incumbents will be expected to respond "after-hours" for service and repair callouts. Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
