The City of Norfolk's Department of Utilities is seeking qualified individuals for an Utility Maintenance Mechanic I in our Wastewater Division. The Utility Maintenance Mechanic I operates various equipment and machinery involved with the installation, repair, and maintenance of the water and wastewater systems. Performs general water meter readings and troubleshoots functions in a pump station. Responds to customer complaints. Ensures pumping stations are functional. Performs related duties as needed.

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Operates and maintains various equipment and machinery by cleaning equipment exterior, performing inspections, monitoring and recording readings, performing preventative maintenance on pumps, conveyors, mixers, tanks, pumps, motors, pipes and other equipment and monitoring equipment for proper operation

  • Manages property by inspecting facilities for proper operation, maintaining the building and surroundings and ensuring that stations are online and functioning properly.

  • Performs related duties by attending specialty training classes and maintaining logs.

  • Performs troubleshooting functions by determining and solving reasons for breakdowns or leaks, responding to fault indicators and determining causes or reasons of mechanical, electrical and electronic or distribution line fault.

  • Performs repairs by overhauling, removing and replacing worn or damaged parts on equipment, machinery and facilities and installing new machinery and equipment, repairing water service and distribution lines.

  • Responds to emergencies by removing storm damage debris.


Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, and technical processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.

One year of experience in machinery repair or maintenance. Experience as a building helper or apprentice preferred. Additional Information & Requirements

Work Hours: Monday

  • Thursday; 7:00 a.m.

  • 5:30 p.m. (four 10 hour shifts)

Job Description: - the following are essential functions of the job but are not all-inclusive. * Lift or hoist and align components into position * Screw, bolt, rivet, weld and braze parts to assemble structural and functional components such as motors, controls, switches, gauges, wiring harnesses, valves, pumps, compressors, condensers, cores and pipes * Cut, thread and connect pipe to functional components and water or power systems of premises * Pump specified gas or fluid into system * Start system, observe operation, read gauges and instruments and adjust mechanisms such as valves, controls and pumps to control level of fluid, pressure and temperature in system * Dismantle malfunctioning systems and test components * Replace or adjust defective or worn parts to repair systems * Ensure behavior and performance supports the company's Mission * Follow company values in responding to others in work situations * Meet "standards for service" behaviors * Use recovery steps to respond to others who are dissatisfied * Make hospitality standards an important part of day-to-day duties * Be a RESPECT System example for others * Perform other routine duties * Perform any duties and tasks as deemed necessary by the Chief Engineer Minimum Qualifications & Requirements Education: * High schooled Diploma or equivalent Professional Certification(s) or License: * Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) -obtain and maintain * USCG Merchant Mariner's Document as a Refrigeration Mechanic * Valid Driver's License * Copy of DD214, if Veteran status Skills & Abilities * Excellent verbal and written communication skills; must be fluent in English * Ability to interact with individuals at all levels in a pleasant and professional manner Experience: * At least 2 years of experience required (directly related to duties and responsibilities of this position) * Cruise industry experience preferred Other: * Must be a minimum of 21years of age. * Submit to and pass alcohol and drug tests as mandated by the USCG including but not limited to pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident/incident testing. Working Conditions: The majority of work is performed in a Marine environment in both indoor and outdoor conditions with exposure to various temperatures and weather conditions, along with a moderate to loud noise level. The Marine operation is subject to varied wake and motion. Positions both live and work onboard a vessel, on a rotational basis for consecutive port-to-port voyages during the regular season. Physical Requirements: * Ability to stand and walk on nearly a constant basis; ability to work long hours each day * Ability to bend, rotate and reach frequently * Ability to carry, push/pull and/or lift materials weighing upwards of 50 lbs * Ascending/descending stairs or ladders safely * Ability to manipulate/handle/grip materials required to perform job * Ability to maneuver through/in/around small and/or confined areas within the vessel * Must be able to maintain both static and dynamic standing balance to complete various duties associated with job * Must be capable of performing emergency duties as listed in the vessel's station bill * Crew bed/bunk equipment are rated for 250 lbs maximum weight capacity per bunk.
