Position Summary Benefits Supplemental Questions

Assists with basic maintenance, preventive maintenance and repair of various mechanical equipment and systems, appliances and other related Service Authority structures and systems.

Position Responsibilities / Essential Job Functions:

  • Assists senior mechanics with gathering and setting up mechanical maintenance materials and with general installation, maintenance and repair of various equipment and systems (i.e., pumps, HVAC equipment, piping, chemical feed systems, blowers, generators, etc.).

  • Provides preventive maintenance assistance such as visual inspections; packing; adjusting; lubing; checking bolts, alarms, fluids (oil, coolant, fuel, etc.); cleaning/changing filters; disabling chargers; etc.

  • Assists with general equipment installation.

  • Assesses SA buildings for problems and assists with general maintenance and repairs (such as leaks, broken windows, etc.).

  • Identifies common faulty mechanical equipment and/or system problems.

  • Works closely with other Mechanics on daily work assignments, projects and tasks.

  • Writes general notes regarding daily maintenance work using the CMMS system and responds to emails.

  • Utilizes appropriate safety precautions as required (i.e., safety glasses, ear protection, hard hat, etc.).

  • Transfers chemicals as needed.

  • May be deemed essential at any time.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills and Experience:

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Possess basic mechanical maintenance knowledge.

  • Ability to learn, retain and apply basic mechanical maintenance knowledge/procedures and safety requirements/PPE to successfully work on various equipment and systems.

  • Ability to read, follow and comprehend equipment manuals, SOPs, SMPs, MSDS, SDS and basic mathematical instructions; and to learn and recognize the applications of new materials.

  • Ability to follow and accept verbal direction and guidance from senior mechanics and work as a member of a team on daily assignments and projects.

  • Possess effective verbal communication and clear, legible and accurate writing skills.

  • Possess knowledge and ability to select and work with general, construction and metric tools.

  • Possess a basic understanding of math in order to mix and apply liquids to equipment.

  • Ability to visually inspect mechanical equipment and assess for basic mechanical problems.

  • Possess basic keyboarding skills and be able to comfortably work with technology and computers.

  • Ability to work on-call as needed.

  • High School diploma or GED.

  • Or combination of education and experience as described above.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Possess at least one year of experience working in the mechanical repair trade.

Special Requirements:

O&M and ESWR:

  • Valid Forklift Operators Certification or obtain within 90 days of appointment.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license consistent with Service Authority policy requirements.

O&M ONLY:

  • Valid Class A Virginia Commercial Driver's License with Tanker endorsement, or acquired 120 days after employment. Must also pass an air brakes knowledge test.

  • Valid Medical Examiner's Card (DOT Physical) or obtain within 120 days of employment.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license consistent with Service Authority policy requirements.

Workers may be assigned to water distribution or sewage collection, typically working as members of a crew engaged in construction, maintenance, repair and restoration activities. Employees operate automotive and/or mechanical equipment relating to the completion of the above tasks. Locates, marks, and protects underground sanitary sewer, water lines, and their related structures and fixtures. Position Responsibilities / Essential Job Functions: * Works as part of a crew to assist in the maintenance, repair, and construction of water and sewer lines to include mains and service lines. Assists in maintaining, inspecting, and reducing infiltration and inflow into the sanitary sewer collection system. Duties include providing services for sewer and water main excavation, repair and new installations; sewer manhole and water valve maintenance and repair and installation; sewer and water main easement maintenance; sewer and water main flushing and root removal as well as numerous other general water and sewer work. Assists in locating sewer and water lines.Assists in maintaining, inspecting and reducing leaks in water distribution. * Participates in the inspection and flushing of sanitary sewer mains. Operates flushing equipment, collects, and disposes debris from flushing operation. Manually installs equipment into manholes and system, sets up and operates winches. * Rehabilitates manholes including inspection, grouting, parging, raising and lowering, resetting frames and covers and installing inflow inserts. Repairs and replaces cleanout caps.Assists homeowners, and contractors to locate and identify problems and structural failures and defects. Responds to customer needs and requests and investigates problems. * Performs manual field locating and marking of sanitary sewer mains, laterals, manholes, water mains, service lines, and other related structures as requested. Locates and marks the horizontal location of water and sewer facilities in accordance with existing construction codes. * Operates pipe and underground utility locating equipment. Meets contractors or construction personnel on site to verify or confirm utility locations and location request, and to provide any other necessary information and answer questions pertaining to work. * Performs varied technical work in gathering, combining and analyzing data pertaining to as-built records and plans. * Performs field recovery work and prepares sketches of existing water and sewer facilities depicting the dimensional location of valves, manholes and related fittings. * Assists with the processing of excavation notification tickets, including preparation of paperwork and gathering and recording information need to complete and process the ticket. * Sets up and performs safe traffic control of personnel and equipment while performing duties in streets and roadways. * Participates in inspecting all new sanitary sewer systems to ensure construction is in compliance with standards and specifications. * Repairs, replaces, and installs sanitary water and sewer connections, lines (mains and laterals) and related facilities including unstopping sanitary sewer lines (main and laterals).Monitors sewer systems. * Performs miscellaneous maintenance duties. Use jackhammers and saws to remove concrete and asphalt.Sets forms, pours concrete and assists in finishing concrete sidewalks.
