BRIEF DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of this position is to perform the correct, safe, and efficient locating of underground utilities. This is accomplished by thoroughly researching maps, drawings, and/or plans.

Searching for underground utilities in the area, properly marking the location of those utilities, completing all necessary documentation, and photographing each locate. Other duties include: flushing water mains in accordance with the Dead End Main flushing program. This includes testing chlorine residuals, meeting deadlines, and completing work orders.

This position is subject to recall. This position is subject to being called in to work twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, in addition to their regularly scheduled work day.

This position is expected to regularly work in or around bodies of water greater in depth than 4 feet, which may pose hazard, especially in the absence of swimming ability.

Code Essential Functions


1 L Regular and reliable attendance in compliance with given schedules is a mandatory requirement of this position. Schedules may be subject to change with or without advance notice

2 H Marking Underground Utilities

  • Determine the existing underground utilities in the vicinity after review of maps, drawing, and plans. Mark all applicable utilities using visual line of site and technical electronic locating equipment with appropriate color paint and flags.

    May include lifting sewer and water manhole covers with mechanically assisted means to determine location. Photographing all locate markings and attaching photographs to the work order. Use industry standards to complete all locate tickets within timeframe designated to meet deadlines, usually 48 hours

3 M Meet with contractors, developers, citizens, or other utilities

  • Schedule and respond to meetings set up with various entities to discuss utility locate status or give special instruction. Respond to request for clarification or re-locate of completed locates in the field.

    Respond and review possible damaged water, wastewater, or storm sewer infrastructure from excavators when necessary. Research history and completion of previous work orders. File necessary reports for billing purposes if needed.

4 L Receives locate request & researches maps, drawings, plans, and visual field review to determine the utilities to mark

  • Receives request for locates through 2-way radio, the digital work order system, and the 811 Ticket Locate Manager. Reads detailed maps, drawings, and plans of underground utilities and determines what utilities need to be marked or cleared.

5 L Map Error Correction

  • Reviews maps, drawings, and plans and compare to onsite visual field review making changes to inaccuracies or omissions. Assists in submitting maps and photographic evidence to Engineering through the digital work order database for review/correction.

6 S Completing Locate Work orders accurately

  • Complete work orders using an iPad to input information into the digital work order database. Attach documentation including photographs to work orders created in the digital work order database. Complete ticket response status using an iPad to enter the information into the 811 Ticket Management System.

7 M Dead End Main Flushing- Test chlorine residuals at designated flush points. Flush mains by opening fire hydrants or dedicated flush points.

Reclaim or dechlorinate water when appropriate. Complete flush work orders in a timely manner. Identify and coordinate new flush point installations.
