Job Summary:

Locate underground mechanical utilities in accordance with OSU policy and OKIE guidelines by using direct and indirect tracer equipment, metal detector, field drawings, engineering prints, maps, GPS equipment transits, mechanical and laser measuring equipment as requested by contractors and/or university staff via Oklahoma One Call in preparation for digging, boring, potholing, excavation, or any activity penetrating the ground surface that may endanger utility systems.

Use mobile and desk-top technologies to transfer and input data collected while in the field to network based software for the purpose of tracking distribution systems maintenance repair and construction throughout campus.

Locate and mark unmapped underground utilities and collect data. Update network-based map with data and images as collected.

Act as safety observer during excavation, boring, or potholing operations in the vicinity of high energy utility systems. (i.e. natural gas, steam, electrical, etc.)

Must be willing to work overtime when needed to handle emergency locates - including evenings, weekends, and holidays or when OSU is closed for other reasons.

Employee in this position is required to be on rotating standby for emergencies and/or any other event after end of work schedule on weekdays, and on weekends and holidays.

Position requires performing outside work in all types of weather, around high levels of dust and noise, and with exposure to construction sites and heavy equipment.

Must use appropriate personal protective equipment as required (gloves, safety vests and glasses, hardhats etc.). These items are provided and are not for personal use.

Due to the communication expectations of the position, the employee will be required to maintain a personal cell phone and will be required to be continually available during and after normal working hours.

Position Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

HS diploma/GED

Two years of prior successful work experience in a utility related field

Have before hire and maintain after hire, a valid driver's license. A valid driver's license must be maintained for the operation of an OSU vehicle, which is required in the performance of job duties as assigned. Have upon hire or obtain within 12-months, and maintain throughout hire, Oklahoma Corporation Commission's qualified operator's training record for natural gas line locating.

Ability to be reliable and follow instructions as presented by supervisor and operate various types of utility locating equipment. Must be able to understand installation and operating instructions and work orders.

Must be able to problem solve and generate detailed accurate notes. Must have good communication skills. Ability to use or become proficient in the use of GIS and associated applications, and Auto CAD software. Ability to become proficient in the use of "AIM" Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software and the use of mobile technology.

Preferred Qualifications:

Five years of documented work experience or three years of experience in a utility or related field. Experience with understanding engineering/utility atlas drawings and familiarity with utility symbology.
