This is a skilled technical position involved in the care and maintenance of trees. Work includes climbing, trimming, and removing trees, operating heavy equipment, chain saws, chippers, and other power and hand tools. Incumbent supervisors the work of the trimmer crew. Effective 1/1/2025 this position will transition to an Electric Utility Arborist Crew Lead.
SUPERVISION
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Electric Division Utility Forester. Incumbent must be able to supervise the removal of tree limbs from live electric lines during tree trimming activities in compliance with established safety procedures. The incumbent provides guidance and direction to Arborist and other employees assisting with tree removal jobs. Work is reviewed through observation of completed projects for quality and adherence to policy
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF WORK
(May not include all duties performed.)
Serves as supervisor over a crew engaged in tree pruning and removing trees and stumps, broken and damaged limbs; assures proper safety precautions and procedures are followed.
Provides the Maintenance Supervisor with accurate information pertaining to the work habits and work activities of the Arborist.
Serves as backup climber for daily utility tree related activities.
Provides the Arborist with guidance based on the most up to date OSHA Regulations, ANSI Standard, and ISA Standards for tree work near live electric wires.
Ability to prune trees to assure adequate clearance for overhead utilities.
Ability to remove split and damaged limbs from storm damaged trees; removes limbs from power lines; removes trees and limbs fallen into street
Assesses pruning requirements of trees and easements; decayed or insect infested trees; determines whether trees should be removed.
Ability to operate bucket truck, pole pruners and specialized equipment such as chain saws, chipper; maintains; repairs, and replaces damaged equipment.
Explains city and department policy to citizens at the job site. Refers citizens seeking more information to the Utility Forester.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK
Possession of a high school diploma and four (4) years of experience in tree trimming work.
Certification as an Arborist by the International Society of Arboriculture.
Considerable knowledge of standard hand and power tools and equipment used in tree trimming and maintenance activities.
Considerable knowledge of safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use of tools and equipment related to tree trimming and to working near overhead power lines.
Ability to plan and guide the work of others on tree removal or related projects.
Ability to read and follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including climbing trees, climbing ropes, bending, stooping, reaching, and lifting heavy objects.
Ability to maintain balance while operating tree trimming equipment.
Ability to work cooperatively with other employees and the general public.
Other Necessary Requirements
Possession of a valid Ohio Commercial Class A with Air Brakes Driver's License.
Possession of valid First Aid and CPR Training Certification.
Possession of valid Electric Hazard Awareness Training Certification.
Twenty-four hour emergency call-in availability.
