POSITION SUMMARY

The City of Englewood is looking for individuals that are energetic and have a passion for water. We strive to implement and maintain the standards set by the State for clean drinking water. This is a full-time position as a certified Water Treatment Facility Operator.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The listed examples of work are not intended to be all-inclusive. They may be modified with additions, deletions, or changes as necessary.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Position requires working independently on varying schedules which may require working 12-hour rotating shifts including days, nights, weekends, and holidays. During emergency events, an operator may be required to assist outside of their normal schedule.

Treats water to meet the demands of the City and the quality standards of the State.

The employee monitors the performance of all equipment associated with the treatment process by conducting routine visual inspections, interpreting instrument readings, and performing daily rounds. They also perform process lab analyses and interpret the test results for the treatment plant.

Conducts sampling at various stages of the treatment process and performs routine laboratory analyses. This may include sampling the distribution system and source water.

Determines proper feed rates and dosages of the chemicals used in the treatment process by performing laboratory analyses on raw and treated water to ensure that the mandatory State drinking water standards are met.

Operates and interprets the SCADA system.

Starts and stops pumps and operates valves to control and adjust flow and processes either manually or by remote control.

Responds to alarms, identifies and corrects mechanical and process problems.

Reports process and equipment status to other operators and supervisor on a regular basis verbally and in writing.

Performs work in accordance with safety policies and procedures.

Prepares work orders and other written requests for maintenance.

Create new and updates SOP's

Performs preventative maintenance including minor repairs.

Handles hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals during delivery, storage, and use.

Makes independent decisions concerning plant operations based on plant specific operation guidelines set in place by the Operator in Responsible Charge (O.R.C)

Maintains good customer service. Answers inquiries from the public as to the quality of the City's water supply. Conducts tours of the treatment facility.

Receives and analyzes emergency calls from the public, including water related situations and sanitary sewer situations from sewer districts outside City limits. Decides how to handle the situation, over the telephone or by notifying the on-call person.

Assures that the treatment facility and outlying areas are clean, safe and presentable at all times for public and regulatory agency inspection.

Trains new personnel using knowledge and experience to enable less experienced employees to obtain the proper expertise necessary in the water treatment field.

Performs daily water rights accounting.

Opportunity for operator on-call duties.

Acquires readings and flow records and operates the city ditch when required.

Inspects water towers and vaults.

Performs other duties as assigned and required.

PREPARATION AND TRAINING

Education: High School Diploma or GED.

Work Experience: Water Treatment Plant experience preferred

Certifications and/or Licensures: Colorado State Operator "D" Certification or higher preferred.

Must have a Colorado Water Professional (CWP) Certification at the time of hire, or be able to obtain the certificate within six months of hire, training materials and exam fee will be provided by the city.

Must be able to advance through the State Operator Certification program.

Required Driver's License: Valid Colorado Driver's License and safe driving record; Commercial License preferred

An equivalent combination of education, training and relevant job experience may be substituted.

Knowledge and Abilities

Strong understanding of chemistry, biology, hydraulics, mechanical, and electronic concepts as they relate to water treatment.

Knowledge of State and Federal Regulatory requirements relating to water facilities and programs.

Ability to work with minimal supervision and exercise independent judgment.

Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and points of view as part of a team.

Ability to follow through on tasks and adapt to changing priorities, process conditions, and circumstances.

Advanced computer skills required to work in a highly technical environment.

Skills

Communication Skills

  • Advanced communication skills required to interact with the public.

Analytical Skills- Advanced analytical skills required to interpret laboratory tests. Also required for projecting supply and demand of water flow.

Mechanical Skills- Advanced mechanical skills required for the calibration of instruments. Also required for the repair and maintenance of equipment and structures. Must be able to operate hand and power tools.

Mathematical Skills

  • Advanced mathematical skills required for calculating chemical dosage, velocities, volumes, flows, demands, pressure, and CT's.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is performed in a plant environment. Works near moving mechanical parts and in high precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/ or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, traffic, toxic, or caustic chemicals.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; hearing protection is required within various locations.

Work is performed in potentially hazardous environments (i.e., confined spaces, electrical, and mechanical hazards).

The employee must occasionally lift and/ or move up to 75 pounds.

SALARY RANGE

Starting salary range will be commensurate with experience and current level of certification.

$21.00 - $ 42.74/ hour
