Hours: Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Pay Range: $30.6584 - $44.4547 Hourly / $63,769.47 - $92,465.78 Annually Starting Pay: $30.6584 Hourly / $63,769.47 Annually Characteristics of the Job Performs specialized, skilled work in the installation, repair and general maintenance of utilities department treatment plant equipment, pumping stations and related instrumentation. Coordinates the mechanical maintenance activities of the utilities treatment plants and pumping stations in support of policies, goals and objectives established by department management.

Exercises independent judgment in determining work methods after receiving written or oral instructions. Examples of Duties Inspect work areas to determine type of work required and materials and equipment to be used. Install, modify, troubleshoot, calibrate, replace and assist with the design of plant equipment and pumping stations, electronic transmitters, sensors, recorders, electrical instrumentation, electronic systems and pumping station control components throughout the city.

Install, operate, calibrate, maintain, and repair chemical feed equipment and systems. Clean, maintain and repair treatment units, building, building systems and grounds. Install, maintain and repair heating, cooling and air exchange equipment and systems.

Install, operate, maintain and repair various types of valves, pumps, gear reducers, air compressors, blowers, internal combustion engines and other mechanical equipment.

Install, operate, maintain and repair various types of electric motors, motor controls, lighting systems and other electrical equipment. Maintain digital maintenance program for equipment maintenance, work order generation, inventories of supplies and equipment.

Instruct, inspect and assist outside contractors on related work. Serve on standby as assigned and respond to emergency call-outs to repair failed equipment and to eliminate malfunctions and safety hazards. Provide training and work instruction to employees on the work performed and the equipment used.

Promote communication and adequate information flow. Prepare operational reports, cost analyses, specifications and documentation of progress toward stated goals and objectives. Ensure duties assigned are carried out in compliance with local, state and federal regulations and laws and conformance to acceptable standards and practices.

Provide timely, accurate responses to requests for services and information. Other duties may be assigned. Required Training and Experience High school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by technical courses in mechanical maintenance and electrical, electronic or plumbing repair; and four (4) years of experience in mechanical maintenance at journeyman level, preferably with one (1) year related specifically to mechanical maintenance in the hydraulic pumping of waters and chemical feeding with an emphasis in mechanical maintenance and instrumentation control; or equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, applicable theories, principles, techniques, equipment and operation of all aspects of water and wastewater treatment, pumping systems, pump station operation and related process control systems; the standard practices, methods, tools and materials of the mechanical trade; good knowledge of computer operations, preventive maintenance programs, GIS and mapping, software installation, modification and maintenance; instrumentation calibration, chemical feeding, metering and metering systems; the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions and devices applicable to water and wastewater treatment and pump station operations and maintenance work. Skill and adeptness with speed in performing physical activities to complete complicated tasks involving close tolerances; reading and interpreting plans, blueprints, shop drawings and schematics; public, employee and labor relations and maintaining effective working relationships; using personal computers and software applications; using hand tools and power tools; the use of electronic/electrical and mechanical diagnostic equipment; and preparation of reports and any related written correspondence. Ability to work independently performing advanced work in both trades and technical areas; read, analyze and interpret documents such as policies, regulations, instructions, procedure manuals and diagrams, schedules and labor agreements; respond effectively to inquiries or complaints; write reports, business correspondence and work procedures; effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, elected officials and the general public; concentrate with continuous close attention for extended periods to obtain accurate results while frequently being exposed to unusual pressure; calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest and percentages; apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry; solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock, dangerous chemicals and hazardous atmospheres.
