Job Summary:

Monitors and maintains the efficient operation of plant boilers; also, monitors and operates the facility water treatment equipment to ensure compliance of discharges in accordance with permit regulations. Works closely with the Environmental Coordinator.

Job Description:


  • Monitors and interprets steam and wastewater gauges, meters and control panel readings and variations in operating conditions (i.e. fluctuations in flows and pH levels). Takes actions according to procedures when process variations occur to maintain permit compliance. Responds to spills and emergencies in accordance with established Blue Diamond spill plan procedures.

  • Operates steam- and wastewater-monitoring stations (valves, gates, pumps, motors and generators) to control flow and treatment of wastewater in accordance with written procedures. Manages pH levels of wastewater with treatment chemicals. Demonstrates safe chemical handling procedures using proper personal protective equipment.

  • Performs routine maintenance functions and sanitation duties on steam and wastewater equipment. Inspects, adjusts, controls, and repairs all the steam and wastewater producing equipment, when needed. Communicates any issues to maintenance staff and Environmental Coordinator.

  • Performs analysis and production of treated water to maintain the systems within prescribed limits. May be required to repair or replace steam and water valves throughout the plant.

  • Responsible for maintaining journals, logs, and various reports for both routine operation and irregularities, which may prompt recommendations or adjustments as necessary.

  • Performs other duties and assignments as required by supervisor.

Education Level and Focus:

  • High School Diploma or GED required

Years and Type of Related Experience Required:

  • Prior experience with boiler operations desirable. Prior experience with wastewater monitoring operations desirable. 1 year prior work experience in an industrial environment. Needs reasonable understanding of steam turbines, generators, pumps, valves, boilers, instruments and controls, water chemistry, basic electricity, and steam plant theory. Must be able to light off and blow down boilers in a safe manner and know all possible methods of feeding water to boilers. Basic computer knowledge desirable.

Interpersonal and Communication:

  • Position may require the performance of duties alone or as a group.

  • Must be able to communicate and maintain positive and effective working relationship with multiple departments.

Technical and Analytical:

  • Position requires the ability to define and solve technical problems in the field; if applicable, apply predetermined solutions that have been outlined by BDG procedures. Must be able to learn the wastewater treatment concept. Must posses an aptitude for measurements, calibrations, and specifications.

Administration and Operations:

  • Works under general supervision. Work consists of routine tasks requiring some simple decision-making. Must be able to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as required. Must be able to work rotating shifts. Must be able to learn HACCP processes and auditing, Good Manufacturing Procedures (GMPs) and follow safety practices.

Physical Demands:

  • The position may require the ability to meet the physical demands of heavy lifting to carry out the assigned duties.

Work Environment:

  • Position may require employee to work around energized equipment and is routinely exposed to hazardous materials. Position may require the exposure to various adverse conditions such as heat, cold, noise, dust, fumes, dirt, grease, and chemical substance.
