JOB SUMMARY:

This is highly skilled, diversified, journey-level work in the installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of electrical, electronic and instrument systems and equipment in a large utility operation. Employees in this class are involved in servicing industrial electrical and electronic generators, pumps, switching systems and related heavy-duty equipment. Duties include the repair of a wide variety of measurement devices. Employee receives assignments in writing or orally and must exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment. Work is reviewed by a supervisor through conferences with the employee, observation of work while in progress and upon completion, and examination of equipment records and reports. Supervision may be exercised over semi-skilled and technical personnel.

This is an essential position, which requires incumbents to report to work during catastrophic events. In case of such an event, incumbents maybe required to work 12-hour shifts, seven days a week to help provide essential services to our customers.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs on a daily basis difficult diagnostics and new installations to analyze problems associated with instrumentation and control systems and electrical systems using test equipment such as electronic meter and simulators.

  • Performs moderately challenging installations, calibrations, diagnostics, repairs, and replacements of instrumentation and control systems equipment and components for water and wastewater treatment facilities, stormwater pump stations, and sanitary sewer lift stations.

  • Performs moderate to difficult installations, calibrations, maintenance, and programming of flow meters, transmitters, controllers, and analytical equipment Service hydraulic, electric, pneumatic and mechanical instruments used for controlling, analyzing, measuring and recording.

  • Communicate with customers to explain purpose of activities that impact services.

  • Leads advanced technical training of others in safe work practices, equipment installation and calibrations, and facility process control.

  • Monitors compliance and communicate safety issues to personnel.

  • Reads, interprets, modifies and updates blueprints, schematics and diagrams in order to troubleshoot, repair, or modify equipment, and to accurately reflect current operating systems.

  • Monitors and makes visual inspections of control and instrumentation equipment to determine operating condition and perform preventative maintenance.

  • Performs complex equipment modifications in order to implement required design changes Maintains accurate inventory and maintenance logs

  • Installs, maintains, repairs, and tests electrical wiring systems, fixtures, motors, generators, transformers, lighting systems, and other industrial electrical and electronic equipment.

  • Inspects, maintains and repairs pneumatic and hydraulic control systems.

  • Tests equipment for potential defects.

  • Calibrates and installs instruments and related devices used for controlling automatic equipment for measuring flow, pressure and temperature.

  • Maintains adequate records relating to the installation, maintenance, testing, calibration and replacement of instruments, controls and related devices.

  • Participate in on-call program and scheduled/unscheduled overtime.

  • Must effectively and positively represent the City in delivering and performing work with colleagues and clients, irrespective of gender, race, religion, age, disability, political affiliation or belief, or sexual orientation.

  • Must establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors and managers.

The Requirements

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Required:

High School Diploma, plus five (5) years' experience in industrial electronics and instrumentation.

Preferred:

An Associate's Degree

Electronics technician certification preferred.

Process control instrumentation certification preferred.

Additional education and experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted for the above requirements.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the principles, theory, practices, materials, tools and equipment of the industrial electrical trade.

  • Knowledge of local, state and national electrical and fire codes.

  • Knowledge of the general principles of telemetry equipment, chemical feed equipment, and instrumentation.

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and ability to apply appropriate safety precautions in electrical work, including work with high voltages.

  • Skill in the use of tools utilized in the electrical trade.

  • Ability to calibrate, test and detect defects in electronic equipment, devices, and systems.

  • Ability to read and interpret specifications, blueprints, diagrams, schematics and equipment manuals.

  • Ability to maintain complete, legible records and make reports and sketches.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors and the public.

  • Ability to supervise a group of employees in a manner conductive to full performance and high morale.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors, managers and the public.

  • Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical abilities described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to conduct sedentary work, light work, medium work, heavy work, climb, crawl, feel, handle, hear, kneel, lift, make rational decisions, pull, push, reach, use repetitive motion, speak, stand, stoop, talk, visualize and walk. WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work involves moderate to heavy physical activity in indoor and outdoor setting under all types of weather conditions with the added exposure to insects, animals and other hazards.

Works in industrial environment such as water and wastewater treatment facilities, and stormwater and reuse water facilities. Is exposed to high voltage and low voltage industrial equipment such as electrical power generators as well as control panels.

The Examination

Required Education and Background Information: Look over the announcement carefully to determine your eligibility. Please note minimum education and experience requirements. Closed competitive positions are open only to employees while open competitive positions are open to anyone who meets the minimum qualifications for the position. Evidence of a GED test score is required if submitted for high school diploma. Examination: Depending on the number of applicants and the quality of their education and experience, the examination may consist of one or more of the following tests: written examination, performance examination, education and experience evaluation, oral examination and/or other job related examinations.

You will be notified of the time and place of your examination when you file or later by mail. A passing grade is required on each part of the process. Repeated participation in any examination for which the same test is used is limited to once every 6 months. Your examination results will be sent by email as soon as possible after the grading is completed.

Final passing grades are used to determine a candidate's position on the eligibility list of successful candidates. Departments fill vacancies from this list. The top three names are considered for each vacancy unless otherwise modified. Those not appointed are returned to the eligibility list for further consideration in accordance with the Civil Service Ordinance. Your name will remain on a register for one year for open competitive examinations and two years for closed competitive except where labor contract conflicts.

Your name may be removed from an eligibility list prior to one year according to Hollywood's Civil Service Ordinance or labor contracts. Your eligibility may be canceled if you refuse a position or if you are not available for work. You are responsible for notifying the Employment Office, in writing, of any change in your address or telephone number.

EMPLOYMENT OF RELATIVES:The City of Hollywood has an Ordinance which regulates the employment of relatives of City employees. Effective January 28, 2008, a relative may only be hired under the following additional conditions:

  • The relative must be among the top three ranked candidates available on the certified eligibility list unless expanded by the Civil Service Board;
