POSITION SUMMARY

The Industrial Mechanic I-III performs highly skilled mechanical work in the installation, inspection, modification, fabrication, and repair of Plant-wide industrial systems and equipment. Mechanical expertise and skillsets desirable to this role include millwright experience, machinist experience, welding and cutting experience, and fabrication of mechanical components. The Industrial Mechanic I-III also assists in the development of the Preventive Maintenance Program and training activities and may assist in the training and direction of onsite work of other crewmembers, as necessary.

The Industrial Mechanic IV is a lead senior level role which performs highly skilled mechanical work in the installation, modification, maintenance, fabrication and repair of industrial equipment and systems and consistently provides training and direction of onsite work of other crew members and tradesmen. Mechanical expertise and skillset required for this role include millwright experience, machinist experience, welding and cutting experience, and fabrication of mechanical components. The Master Industrial Mechanic also assists in the development of preventive maintenance and training activities.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to: Operations & Maintenance Superintendent

Direct Reports: None, however, may direct and inspect the onsite work of other crewmembers, as necessary.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Adheres to the requirements in the most current and applicable version of City of Englewood Administrative Policy Manual and/or the Englewood Employees Association Collective Bargaining Agreement.

  • Maintains and promotes satisfactory and harmonious relationships with the public and other employees; exhibits a high degree of professionalism, initiative, and tact on an ongoing and continual basis.

  • Assists with ordering materials to facilitate the scheduled completion of assigned work.

  • Installs, modifies, maintains, repairs, and inspects complex industrial equipment such as gearboxes, pumps, fans, compressors, motors, chemical systems, material handling equipment, compressed air supply systems, boilers and other water treatment equipment.

  • Performs precision machine alignments on equipment including electric motors.

  • Fabricates components using shop equipment such as ironworker, bandsaw, drill presses and grinders.

  • Performs precision machine work using a mill and lathe.

  • Operates welding and cutting equipment such as GMAW, GTAW, and SMAW welding, soldering, plasma, and oxy-fuel torch.

  • Performs layout work on new equipment and makes recommendations on modifications to existing equipment interprets and alters drawings or blueprints to make field fits.

  • Works from complex engineering drawings to complete projects and assigned work.

  • Removes, repairs, reinstalls, and inspects deep well pumps.

  • Repairs horizontal and vertical drive centrifugal pumps.

  • Installs spherical, thrust, radial, and line-shaft bearings on pumps, motors, and gearboxes.

  • Performs and assists with building facilities maintenance.

  • Recommends revisions to the Preventive Maintenance Program.

  • Assists with on-the-job training of less experienced Industrial Mechanics.

  • Contributes to the development and implementation of goals, objectives, procedures, and service standards.

  • Identifies and determines operational parameters and requirements for various maintenance programs, including the development, implementation and evaluation of preventative maintenance, and safety programs.

  • Ensures maintenance and repair quality to prolong the life of industrial equipment and machinery.

  • Completes reports and forms on labor, supplies, purchasing, accident forms, and hazardous condition reports.

  • Stays informed of relevant technological advances for industrial equipment and machinery by networking, reading, and attending conferences/seminars.

  • Identifies, reports, and corrects unsafe workplace conditions or hazards, understands and complies with applicable safety, security and emergency response policies and procedures.

  • May be asked to serve on the Safety Culture Committee.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Industrial Mechanic IV includes the following additional duties:

  • Assists Superintendent in the direction of onsite work of other crew members and tradesmen in lower classifications and assists in ordering materials to facilitate the scheduled completion of assigned work.

  • Performs lead role responsibilities including assisting in the direction of onsite work of other crew members, tradesmen in lower classifications.

  • Assists the Superintendent with planning work and ordering materials to facilitate the scheduled completion of assigned work.

  • Assists with on the job training of Industrial Mechanic I-III for specialized areas.

PREPARATION AND TRAINING

Education: High School Education or GED. Vocational school or college education desired.

Work Experience:

Industrial Mechanic I 1 year

Industrial Mechanic II 3 years

Industrial Mechanic III 5+ years

Or: Completion of a four-year apprenticeship or four years' experience working as a millwright, machinist, pipefitter, welder or as an industrial maintenance mechanic on equipment similar to equipment found at a water or wastewater treatment plant.

Industrial Mechanic IV: Completion of a four-year apprenticeship or six years' experience working as a millwright, machinist, pipefitter, welder or as an industrial maintenance mechanic on equipment similar to equipment found at a water or wastewater treatment plant.

Certifications and/or Licensures Industrial Mechanic I-III: N/A

Certifications and/or Licensures Industrial Mechanic IV: Society for Maintenance and Reliability Professional's (SMRP) Certified Maintenance and Reliability Technician (CMRT) certification.

Required Driver's License: Valid Colorado driver's license and a clear or acceptable MVR.

An equivalent combination of education, training and relevant job experience may be substituted.

Knowledge

Advanced knowledge of:

  • Industrial equipment, components, and systems (mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic)

Working knowledge of:

  • Fabrication and machining equipment

  • Interpreting blueprints and technical drawings

  • Applications software for Windows environment, Microsoft Office preferred.

Skills and Abilities

Computer Skills

  • Strong skills needed to work in a high technology environment, work with Computerized Maintenance Management System, Microsoft Office and other computer periphery equipment, and programs.

Communication

  • Strong skills needed to communicate both verbally and in writing. Ability to write reports and correspondence and deliver informal presentations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other plant and city departments/divisions, management, public officials, contractors, vendors, and the general public.

Analytical

  • Strong skills needed to evaluate and determine repair work, and interpret technical manuals, specifications, blueprints, schematics, and mechanical drawings.

Mechanical

  • Advanced skills required to work with the tools and equipment used in maintenance, repair, and construction.

Project Management

  • Strong skills needed to plan, direct, and organize work, and enact long range plans.

Mathematical

  • Strong skills needed to use mathematical formulas and conversion tables. Working in both Metric and SAE scaling systems

WORKING CONDITIONS

Requires extensive walking, carrying, lifting, kneeling, bending, reaching, and squatting. May be required to lift up to 75 pounds. Major activities are performed on level, slippery, sloping, unstable, and/or uneven terrain in a variety of weather conditions. May be exposed to extreme cold, heat, heights, temperature swings, constant noise, mechanical and electrical hazards, fumes, odors, and chemicals. Work is performed in an office, outside, and in an industrial environment.

HOURLY RATES:

Depending on experience and educational achievements:

Industrial Mechanic I: $22.31 - $33.47

Industrial Mechanic II: $25.21 - $37.82

Industrial Mechanic III: $28.49 - $42.74

Industrial Mechanic IV: $32.19 - $48.29
