Nursing Support Tech

Under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN), the Nursing Support Technician (NST) performs patient care, respiratory functions and unit functions appropriate to the position, and in compliance with hospital policies, protocols, and procedures. The NST is expected to anticipate the needs of the patient with the scope of their practice.

The NST collects reports and documents patient data, transcribes orders and keeps the RN informed of pertinent changes in patient condition. The NST also participates in orientation of new personnel as appropriate. Collects reports and documents all patient data accurately in a timely fashion according to nursing policy, including: BPs, HRS, RRS, Temps, O2 Sats, daily wts, l, OS.

Performs any ancillary testing skills including but not limited to: accu-checks, telemetry connections and restraints. Completes all assigned tasks and communicates to the RN the patient responses to care provided in an accurately and timely manner.

Assists with unit orientation and continuing education of students and employees as appropriate. Makes hourly patient rounds in conjunction with the nurse for fluids, toileting, hygiene, turning and keeps patient rooms and areas clean, neat and maintains items within reach. Pays extra attention to patients in high fall risk categories.

Updates information on white boards in patient rooms. Demonstrates responsibility for own competency, mandatories and annual performance evaluation by maintaining all personal data up-to-date.

Meets educational requirements for new equipment, materials, procedures, and technology. Prepares for the performance evaluation conference by submitting completed skills list and education attendance documents one month prior to due date.

Understands and follows health standards related to risk management, safety and infection control. Occasionally enters areas where medications are stored (I.E. IV Fluids). Adheres to and consistently supports professional standards and health care regulations that provide for and promote safety, quality patient care and patient satisfaction. Demonstrates responsibility for maintaining knowledge base of current unit and hospital communication through a variety of modalities including but limited to, communication books, posted notices, meeting minutes, Jackson Hospital intranet and Jackson Hospital email.

Unit Secretary

Under the direction of unit management, the Unit Secretary(US) performs unit functions appropriate to the position, and in compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and protocols. Functions include but are not limited to, managing supplies, answering telephones and call lights, maintaining call board and assisting customers.

The Unit Secretary will participate in patient care by requesting, charting and recording patient data in a timely fashion according to hospital policy and keeping the RN informed of pertinent data. The Unit Secretary transcribes physician orders in an accurate and timely fashion; participates in the patient's admission, transfer and/or discharge and facilitates rapid notification of Bed Control, Registration and Housekeeping in a timely manner.

Maintains an organized work environment (which may include files, supplies, equipment, etc) to ensure easy retrievability and physical professional appearance. Maintains optimal inventory supplies in an effort to enhance workflow efficiencies. Provides secretarial support as appropriate which may include data entry, faxing, copying, scheduling, charting, routine, etc. Demonstrates responsibility for own competency/mandatories and annual performance evaluation by maintaining all personal data up-to-date.

Meets educational requirements for new equipment, materials, procedures and technology. Prepares for the performance evaluation conference by submitting required documents, and self-evaluation form one month prior to due date.

Monitors Patient Care Board and unit printer at least every 2 hours for electronic order entries. Notifies RN of new findings. Notifies Physicians of consult in a timely manner and enters consults correctly electronically.

Nursing Support Tech

High School diploma or equivalent. Previous work experience in job related position. Nurse Aide certificate or certification or 1 year of related experience.

Medical equipment used in the delivery of patient care; telephone, fax, copier, personal computer and related software. Strong verbal and customer focused relations skills required. Ability to interact with the public.

Ability to form effective working relationships with hospital staff and patients. Ability to read, write and follow verbal and written instructions.

Must be able to assist in lifting, turning, pushing, pulling and ambulating patients, and moving equipment involving a minimum of 50 pounds. Visual and hearing acuity.

Frequent walking and standing. Manual dexterity necessary to manipulate patient equipment. Ability to meet the attendance requirements of the job.

Unit Secretary

High School Education or G.E.D. BLS. Requires computer skills, ability to type, good communication, time management and customer focused skills.

Strong customer skills required. Ability to read, write and follow oral and written commands.

Ability to lift and handle unit supplies involving a minimum of 30 pounds. May assist in ambulating or transporting patients.

Visual and hearing acuity necessary. Able to meet the attendance requirements of the job. Primarily, sitting with some walking required in running errands. Work area is climate controlled.

May be required to rotate to other than assigned unit or shift in the event of acute staffing needs. May be exposed to risk of communicable diseases, radiation, repetitive motion and strains involved in moving patients and equipment or supplies if proper lifting techniques are not used.

Daily interaction with staff and physicians. Handles highly confidential files, reports and correspondence.
