About Our Job When you join the team as an Usher, you'll work with and meet exciting people who share your passion for live theater, while also being able to work in your community.
The Ellie Caulkins Opera House at the Denver Performing Arts Complex is the only venue for Opera and Ballet performances and hosts additional diverse programming throughout the year.
Ushers are an integral part of every performance.
You'll help welcome our audiences, make them feel at home and ensure everything runs smoothly from lights up to curtains down.
Additionally, as an Usher at Ellie Caulkins Opera House, you can expect to:
Exhibit absolute courtesy and professionalism in dealing with the public Collect and scan tickets for admission Politely direct and escort patrons to their seats Provide patrons with programs and other relevant materials Check assigned section(s) for cleanliness Comply with all standards and policies as provided Stand for prolonged periods of time, move about in a darkened theater, climb stairs frequently, and lift heavy objects Provide and wear a uniform which consists of black pants and socks, black shined shoes, tuxedo shirt, vest and bow tie Perform other duties as directed Please Note: Work Hours fluctuate based on event schedule, but most shifts are during nights and weekends.
Summer is typically the slow season and winter is typically the busy season.
This position is On-Call, meaning you will work as needed.
On-call positions are not eligible for City benefits The work assignment does not always allow time for ushers to watch the performances.
To remain in active on-call status, new Ushers must be available to work 35% of each month's events.
About You To be considered, you must be available to attend a mandatory event either Wednesday, October 17th from 1:00 - 6:00 pm or Thursday, October 18th from 1:00 - 6:00 pm.
This event will include an interview and, if selected, you will complete on-boarding paperwork and a physical (you may potentially have to complete the physical at a different location and date). You will be contacted directly to confirm an interview time.
Please plan to spend 1.5 hours at this event.
You must also be able to attend a mandatory orientation and participate in mandatory evening training in mid-October.
Our Ideal Usher Candidates: Must be willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays Must be willing and able to work 4-6 hour shifts Must provide and wear black dress slacks, and socks, black shined shoes, tuxedo shirt, black vest, and a bow tie while working Must be available to work a minimum 35% or each month's events to remain in active on-call status Must be able to maintain composure under stress and remain calm during emergency situations Must have regular access to email, as this will be the regular method of communication for scheduling Must apply online to be considered for an interview - you will be invited to the hiring event after completion of online application and manager review We recognize your time is valuable, so please do not apply unless you meet the following required minimum qualifications:
Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
One (1) year of customer service experience.

In addition to performances by Lamont students and faculty, the Newman Center is an in-demand performance venue for numerous rental clients including the Denver Post Pen and Podium Series, Friends of Chamber Music, Denver Brass, Wonderbound Dance, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, Urban League of Denver, The CELL and many others. The Newman Center also presents nationally touring performing arts groups through its acclaimed series, Newman Center Presents. The Newman Center's education and community engagement programs engage students, teachers and the community through numerous programs including master classes, workshops, student and family performances. The education and engagement programming serves more than 5,000 students and families annually. Position Summary The Education and Engagement Manager will provide support for all education and engagement initiatives at the Newman Center. Working closely with the Executive Director, the Education and Engagement Manager will implement arts learning opportunities for students K-12, DU students and the community partnerships with faculty/staff/students on campus as well as partnerships in the greater Denver community. Primary duties include but are not limited to: implementation of all Newman Center educational and community engagement initiatives including the Student Matinee Series, master classes, the Musical Explorers program, community workshops, pre- and post-performance talkbacks with Newman Center guest artists. The position will also participate in planning and implementing the integration of Newman Center programming throughout the DU campus as well as local schools and community organizations through strategic and coordinated planning and communication. Essential Functions * Implement and coordinate the planning of educational and community engagement activities in conjunction with Newman Center Presents guest artists. * Coordinate community engagement activities and local partnerships for the purposes of connecting the Newman Center performing arts and education programs to local and extended communities * Coordinate logistics for pre- and post-show talkbacks (Behind the Curtain) with guests artists including selection of moderator and discussion * Coordinate all master classes and workshops with guest artists including promotion, registration, photo and/or video documentation, assembling testimonials and other requirements for project reporting. * Maintain accurate and detailed records of participation, monitoring expected metrics. * Oversee the planning and implementation of the Student Matinee Series * Oversee the planning and implementation of the new Musical Explorers program * Work closely with the Programming Coordinator to arrange logistics and plan details for artist master classes, ancillary programs, and workshops in the community. * Assist with the strategic expansion of education and engagement initiatives into areas targeted by Newman Center leadership (e.g. local school districts, DU campus, etc.) * Manage and coordinate the planning of engagement activities for the Newman Center Presents across the DU Campus. * Support arts engagement and audience development, as well as the integration of the arts/arts programming into academic curricula and life at DU. * Serve as a representative for the Newman Center with community partners and other arts education leaders in the community.
