The role of Strategic Engagement is to ensure that BIPI's top US customers (HCP's, Health Systems, and Payors) are well connected and engaged in a coordinated way with HP Pharma across R&D, Medical and the commercial team. This requires working knowledge and taking into account the needs of stakeholders, BIPI's strategy, and a high level of internal working knowledge of BI. TheDirector of Strategic Engagement(SE), leads and empowers the SE team to work collaboratively across BI's cross-functional commercial and scientific teams (CDMA, FBM, Clinical Operations, R&D, Commercial Customer Facing Teams) to successfully engage and integrate BI leaders into external stakeholder engagements and business partnership opportunities (individual experts and health system decision makers). Leads an SE team (up to 10 people) that is enabled to plan, develop and execute innovative strategic and tactical national and regional expert initiatives that: identifies and aligns national and regional key external experts with BI scientific and commercial strategies; monitors and assess emerging and competitive intelligence trends in the healthcare landscape to inform the organization and provide novel solutions where needed; networks with BI senior leadership to engage them in executive encounters with key external stakeholders; manages oversight of global access and engagement of US national and regional Key External Experts (KEEs) and Key Decision Makers (KDMs) for appropriate and compliant utilization strategies in the best interest of BI business needs. Ensures that the SE team is enabled to perform successfully in strategic engagement with key customers by strengthening and building the teams' competencies and skills with BI's value driven culture.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Outlook, Market, and Internal

  • Develop a strategic integrated external expert model, utilizing insight generation and data analysis to strategically inform this vision.

  • Drive a SE vision and strategy through planning, developing and executing strategic and tactical SE initiatives that align with scientific strategic direction to impact the organization's commercial success. The Director evaluates emerging trends in the healthcare landscape and develops strategies and tactics in support of the identified trends. The Director possesses strong internal networking acumen to facilitate leadership support and engagement.

  • Best Practice Development:

  • Develop and refine infrastructure to instill operational excellence in tools, templates and processes. Identify and lead the development of SE Innovative Best Practices to advance BIs Leadership with KEEs/KDMs and create meaningful relationships and partnerships across all Therapeutic Areas.

  • Provide strategic oversight and counsel to support the SE team efforts in building and engaging with key stakeholders for meaningful partnerships and be recognized as an industry leader in the areas of innovation, science and technology, quality and compliance.

  • Cross Functional Executive Engagement:

  • Lead as the SE Champion with senior and executive leadership to sustain leadership support of a value based strategic engagement competency, aligned with medical, commercial and key global colleagues, across the product lifecycle from early compound development through commercialization.

  • Engage with Senior Leadership to continue to evolve, empower and sustain the SE business model as a centralized, structured, and disciplined approach to quality and compliant based KEE/KDM engagements and partnerships.

  • Strategic Integration, Stakeholder Identification and Planning:

  • Lead the SE team in the identification, strategy and process of KEE/KDM selection in alignment with BI Therapeutic Area business objectives to meet TA goals and objectives.

  • Ensure active SE Team participation in product and franchise planning processes and cross functional team meetings.

  • Lead the development, organizational alignment and execution of the Integrated Stakeholder Engagement Plan (ISEP).

  • Lead the SE Team who serve as team members of the Integrated Brand Plan process, and who are the key drivers of the Integrated Stakeholder Engagement Plan (ISEP), which supports the IBP.

  • Ensure SE Team collaboration to develop a KEE/KDM engagement strategy by therapeutic area, in alignment with BI scientific research and integrated Health Systems, with emphasis on business-defined disease states.

  • Articulate shared goals between BI and appropriate KEEs/KDMs whose attributes and expertise align with internal business strategies and objectives.

  • Budget Management and Process Improvement:

  • Create departmental budgets; oversee expenditures and appropriate resources to maximize business needs and departmental growth.

  • Design and implement governance processes and cross-functional governance bodies that evaluates, reviews and assesses SE processes to enhance stakeholder engagement efficiencies to streamline departmental work flow.

  • Advocate for new SE policies and guidelines in parallel with market and environmental trends to ensure excellence in operational practices and sustain a competitive leadership advantage.

  • Monitor the evolving external environment and execute internal change where needed based on external signals to continuously improve our products, and processes in service of our patients and company goals and priorities.

  • Team Development:

  • Evolve SE Competencies and Skills with the SE Team through innovative case based Best Practice learning curriculum, and continually sharpen individual skills.

  • Provide transparency of a high-level, performance based Best Practices culture through communication of SE Qualitative and Quantitative metrics, distributed in a Dashboard of KEE engagement performance metrics.

  • Ensure an internal robust pipeline of SE talent and succession planning process is in place to ensure leadership continuity.

  • Actively creates new guidance and promotes compliant, ethical activities and behaviors within all business practices, by following all applicable policies and procedures, completing all required compliance training in a timely fashion, and seeking appropriate advice and counsel in complex challenging situations.


  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution (science degree and/or Master's degree preferred) with a minimum of ten (10) years in the pharmaceutical, biotech, device or diagnostic industry, and preferably eight (8) years in advocacy relations or equivalent.

  • Experience and proven track record to effectively interact and engage with C-Suite business leaders within the healthcare industry, and ability to interact at a prominent level with company executives.

  • Expert knowledge is required in Opinion Leader, relationship management, or strategic engagement; experience and/or working knowledge in the following areas: medical affairs, R&D, patient advocacy, professional relations, public relations, government relations, marketing, and philanthropy

  • Understanding of brand and franchise strategy/tactics, including relevant scientific, medical, economic and policy-related matters related to the therapeutic areas

  • Proven ability to manage, lead by example, and successfully coach others; Minimum of six (6) years of management experience

  • Strong knowledge of strategic engagement required to drive innovative strategies, programs, and tactics, which supports the company's strategic objectives across therapeutic areas, scientific research, and integrated Health Systems goals.

  • Working knowledge preferred in the following disease states: including but not limited too; respiratory, oncology, cardio-metabolic, CNS, dermatology and immunology combined with analytical ability to prioritize external experts (KEE's/KDM's) to be engaged and integrated into the strategic and tactical plans for all products within each franchise and those above brand/franchise.

  • Strong business acumen, analytic skills and knowledge of the US healthcare landscape including payors and health systems and their actual and potential impact on BIPI; inform solutions/recommendations to BI strategic leadership.

  • Proven history of creating senior level networks, internally and externally, and the ability to navigate those relationships (ie, executive presence)

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of social media space, e-business channels, patient and consumer trends, to develop innovative opportunities and solutions preferred.

  • Excels as a visionary and a highly innovative business leader who seeks novel solutions to meet business objectives, & exhibits a high degree of ethical standards.

  • Proven organizational skills and leads with a sense of purpose, while possessing the agility to multi-task complex projects.

  • Exhibits strong interpersonal and customer-centric skills that result in building meaningful partnerships and relationships with key customers, both internally and externally.

  • Skilled in exercising sound judgement for critical decision making, conflict management for resolutions, and exercising exceptional listening skills with teams and customers.

  • Strategic planning, budget management, project related planning, program development, agency oversight.

  • Market and customer research analytics preferred.

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
