SUMMARY

The Reading Interventionist will work with principals, teachers, staff, students and the Elementary/Middle English/Language Arts Specialist to ensure the implementation of the reading initiative at their assigned school.

Competencies and Performance Standards will be used for interventionist evaluation in conjunction with measures of student growth. Measures of student growth will be aligned with the Caddo Parish Public School System's accountability measures as outlined in the Louisiana Accountability System.

Domain 1: Planning and Preparation- 1C-Setting Instructional Outcomes

  • The interventionist values, sequences and aligns curriculum enabling students to build their understanding of important ideas from concept to concept.

  • The interventionist designs and structures lessons so that learner outcomes are at an appropriate cognitive level.

  • The interventionist writes and plans multi-disciplinary outcomes for student learning, not student activity.

  • The interventionist differentiates outcomes and instruction for students of varied abilities.

  • The interventionist creates and/or uses a variety of assessment tools that are curriculum-aligned and challenging.

Domain 2: The Classroom Environment- 2C-Managing Classroom Procedures

  • The interventionist helps students to develop skills to work purposefully and cooperatively in groups.

  • The interventionist facilitates lessons that engage students in different types of activities-large groups, small groups and independent work.

  • The interventionist ensures smooth functioning of all routines and maximizes instructional time.

Domain 3: Instruction-3B-Questioning and Discussion Techniques

  • The interventionist develops and presents questions that cause students to think and reflect, resulting in a deeper understanding of the topic.

  • The interventionist promotes learning through discussion.

  • The interventionist uses a range of techniques to ensure that all students contribute to the discussion and enlists the assistance of students to ensure this outcome.

Domain 3: Instruction-3C-Engaging Students in Learning

  • The interventionist facilitates activities and assignments that promote learning and are aligned with the goals of the lesson.

  • The interventionist groups students for instruction in a variety of ways using factors such as similar backgrounds, ability levels, as well as random groupings.

  • The interventionist selects instructional materials suited to engaging students in understanding and learning at a deeper level.

  • The interventionist delivers lessons that are appropriately structured and paced.

Domain 3: Instruction-3D-Using Assessment in Instruction

  • The interventionist aligns assessment to the curriculum.

  • The interventionist informs students of the criteria for assessment.

  • The interventionist monitors student learning using a variety of techniques.

  • The interventionist provides valuable feedback in a timely, constructive and substantive manner.

  • The interventionist promotes student self-assessment and student self-monitoring of their progress.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Administers intervention groups in accordance with Caddo Parish School Board policies and regulations.

  • Participates in regular data meetings and assists in forming and changing groups of students based on data.

  • Engages in professional development.

  • Takes an active role in the School Building Level Screening Committee.

  • Implements the School Literacy Plan.

  • Creates partnerships with parents/caregivers, paraprofessionals and colleagues.

  • Provides clear and timely information to administrators and reading content coach regarding student progress, and reports, et. al.

  • Accepts and exercises responsibilities for duties and assignments related to the reading initiative.

  • Accepts other responsibilities as required by the principal or his/her designee as it relates to the reading initiative.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree in education; valid Louisiana Teaching Certificate; at least five years of elementary teaching experience, including reading instruction; Science of Reading; minimum of twelve graduate hours in reading instruction at the elementary level (preferred).

PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Ability to plan, organize and oversee the work of the school staff. Ability to work tactfully and harmoniously with schools, staff, parents and/or the public. Ability to hold records, reports and conversations in confidence. Encourages cooperation between teachers and parents in order to ensure a professional instructional climate for students. Physical stamina and emotional stability to work effectively under pressure and to keep all aspects of the job under control. Exhibits professionalism in dealing with all members of the staff. Neat, well-groomed appearance.
