Urban Planning Leader

We are looking for an Urban Planner Leader to join our New York Office to focus on urban and master planning assignments. You will join the leadership of a dynamic team of urban and transport planners with a focus on identifying and delivering innovative planning opportunities for a range of client types including Government, Transport Agencies, Our work seeks to uncover and strengthen the interrelationships between land use, transportation, economic and natural systems while being grounded in sustainable and resilient urban design. The scale of projects can vary from individual site planning assignments to large scale masterplanning along corridors or in larger districts. We work in partnership with architects, urban designers and urban planners but we also work independently leveraging the skills and talents of our Integrated Planning team in partnership with experts in resiliency, civil engineering, building designs and information technologists. You will support the Integrated Planning Leader and provide day-to-day project management leadership on Planning assignments, supervision for team members with responsibility for workflow, staff supervision, team and project finances and identifying and winning future work.

The ideal candidate will share our passion for creating great places and achieving sustainable planning outcomes that help 'shape a better world'. The candidate should have a minimum 8 years of experience and will have a strong background and understanding of the US planning system and will be familiar with the North-East US markets, including New York.

Responsible for:

  • Conduct urban planning studies at a variety of scales. Potential projects include station area plans, downtown master plans, waterfront studies, site plans and site-wide master planning studies

  • Work in partnership with other teams supporting large infrastructure projects where planning is a needed component

  • Management of large, complex, long-term projects coordinating many different people/facilities/resources etc within tight time and budget constraints

  • Predicting and planning future resources

  • Setting and meeting agreed budgets; has input to the overall business operating plan

  • Responsible and accountable for client relations and deadlines (internal and/or external)

  • Represents Arup in the industry at high levels nationally and internationally, e.g. government think tanks, national policy and international conferences

  • Executes responsibilities as outlined in the firm's Quality Management System

  • Responsible for significant portions of presentations and public facilitation, including planning, leading and delivering technical information during public involvement and stakeholder meetings

  • Responsible for the recruitment, appraisal, performance, development, morale and motivation of specified staff

  • Developing a team of planners and engineers with a focus on innovative technical solutions

  • Contributing to the current and future overall performance of the group as part of the management team, including procuring and negotiating major contracts with customers/clients and/or suppliers/contractors

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) in engineering, planning or related field

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in the planning sector with major project leadership experience

  • Familiarity with the US planning market with a potential client portfolio.

  • Familiarity with various analysis tools

  • AICP Certification is preferred

As Planning and Urban Design Director for the US, you'll help lead projects focused on urban design; integration of architecture; street design; public space design; sustainability-focused urban planning; and integrated mobility planning. Your Key Responsibilities * Lead urban design and urban planning for projects within the Boston area for our Urban Places team. * Increase the visibility of urban planning and urban design within the Boston and Northeastern U.S. markets and beyond. * Work with other Stantec disciplines—including architecture, transportation, power and energy, landscape architecture, and civil engineering—to deliver high-quality design projects in the Northeast and nationally. * Collaborate with urban planners, architects, mobility planners, and landscape architects to develop and project the group's thought leadership on all things urban, both in the U.S. and as part of Stantec's global Urban Places initiative. * Manage the day-to-day operations of the design team and provide leadership/mentorship for team members, including training and development, estimating personnel needs, assigning work, meeting completion dates, and interpreting and ensuring consistent application of Stantec standards. * Make decisions and recommendations on employment issues, such as staff selection, hiring, pay, promotion, transfer, demotion, or termination. * Lead all aspects of the project-development cycle, including client engagement, preparation of fee proposals, and project delivery. * Engage regularly with key clients to discuss current projects and evaluate our performance. Identify new business opportunities, either with current clients or through referrals, with an emphasis on business development and strategic pursuits. * Help create master plans and consult on planning policy to support sustainable communities and urban places. * Participate in the larger Urban Places leadership team to coordinate virtual sharing of Urban Places staff resources across North America. * Perform other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned. Your Capabilities and Credentials * Technical expertise in all relevant areas of design and understanding of various design methods. * Demonstrated effectiveness in building and maintaining client relationships. Proven ability to translate those relationships into winning opportunities * Ability to communicate effectively, develop strong internal relationships, and foster a culture of collaboration. * Thorough understanding of codes, legal, and design requirements, with significant local jurisdictional experience and established contacts. * Mastery of project management. * Proficiency in drafting/design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop, InDesign, and Adobe Acrobat.Education and Experience The minimum education requirement is a bachelor's degree or equivalent in architecture, planning, urban design, landscape architecture, or a related field.
