Job Summary
The UNG Upward Bound Programs are a year-long college preparatory program for first generation and/or low-income high school students attending Gilmer High School in Ellijay, GA and Johnson High School in Gainesville, GA. UNG UB is committed to ensuring student success in the global community and workforce by providing young scholars with the knowledge, skills, and disposition needed to gain admission to a postsecondary institution and earn a college degree.
The Summer Residential Component is an intensive three-week academic enrichment program that meets Sunday evening through Friday. Summer participants will live in a residence hall on UNG's Dahlonega campus and will be under 24-hour adult supervision by the Upward Bound Administration and Summer Residential Advisors. Academic classes are held Monday
Thursday, 8:00 am
12:30 pm and/or 1:30 pm
5:00 pm. Classes will consist of math, English, science, social studies, foreign language, and/or elective courses. The UB program also offers college and career readiness workshops and cultural enrichment field trips.
Summer instructors are responsible for assisting in the development of curriculum, needs assessment, and pre/post-tests. They must develop and maintain lesson plans and evaluations, provide classroom instruction in assigned academic courses, asses student needs and provide tutorials as needed. The tentative dates for instruction are June 10th
Responsibilities
Develops, implements, and lead effective curriculum/units, lessons and classroom activities; Evaluate the objective, materials and format of the classes and effect necessary change.
Provide individualized instruction to each student by promoting interactive learning; Observe and evaluate student's performance and development; Assign and grade class work, homework, tests and assignments.
Demonstrate a commitment, through mentoring, to assist first generation and economically disadvantaged students develop motivational skills necessary for success in college.
Maintain accurate and timely records of student contact and maintain confidentiality; Assist in event set-up and clean up throughout UB Summer Residential Component.
Organizes class systems/procedures and manages student behavior to ensure all students are fully engaged in learning; supports systems/procedures of classroom teachers.
Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by Upward policies and procedures.
Attend staff meetings and carry out any other duties as assigned by the staff.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Effectively work with students with diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds.
Ability to communicate effectively with students and staff.
Required Qualifications
B.A. degree in an academic discipline.
Experience and/or knowledge of working with low income/first generation college students.
Teacher certification preferred in the following areas: Science (Through Physics), Math (Through Calculus), English, Foreign Language (Spanish, German & French).
