Central Carolina Community College's Upward Bound programs works with low-income, future first-generation college school students from Harnett and Lee County High Schools with the goal of helping our students enroll and succeed at post-secondary education. During the summer, our rising sophomores and juniors attend a residential summer academy where they are provided with instruction in composition and literature, science, math, and foreign language in addition to other skills that will be helpful in transitioning from high school to college.
Our Summer Residential Academy will take place at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill Summer Counselors supervised by the Lead Counselor are responsible for providing supervision of approximately 50 high school students during the summer academy.Summer Counselors main responsibilities include ensuring the safety and well being of students during their overnight stay; mentoring students; coordinating evening activities; assisting with special events; and enforcing the rules and regulations of the program.
SCHEDULE:
The first week of June we will schedule training and preparation time for our counselors.
Students will move in on Sunday, June 9 and stay Sunday-Thursday evenings, moving out on Thursday, June 27. Counselors will be given individual schedules for each week with around 37-40 hours of "on-duty shifts" to ensure adequate coverage for our students.
After June 27, there MAY be some opportunities to continue working through July helping with field trips and special events, but this would not be required.
COMPENSATION:
Counselors will earn $16.00 an hour. Counselors will receive housing in a UNC dorm during the weeks they are staying with students on campus (including weekends if they would like to stay on campus). They will also be provided with meals during the days that they are supervising students.

Essential Duties
Thursday evenings.
Assist in the coordination and facilitation of daily eveningactivities, including team building activities, physical activity, and residential activities;
Support strong student engagement in the program by demonstrating enthusiasm and offering positive motivation for students;
Serve as a role model, mentor, and tutor;
Enforce the rules and regulations of the Upward Bound program.
Minimum Requirements
Completion of 2 semesters in college with a minimum GPA of 2.5.
At least one year of work or volunteer experience with high school or middle school students in aneducational/summer camp setting.
Preferred Requirements
Work experience in a youth camp setting.
Work or volunteer experience with first-generation students and students from low-income families.
Preference for candidates who have succeeded in overcoming barriers similar tothose confronting the program's target population (i.e. candidates from first-generationor low-incomebackgrounds).
