Unix/Linux Systems Administrator supports and maintains Unix/Linux servers. This includes planning for the operating systems and hardware available from several vendors (Solaris, HP-UX, Red Hat, AIX, CentOS etc).

Support and report Tier 1 service outages and other problems, and being the Tier 1 point of contact for issues

Day to Day Work

Responsible for the day to day support of computer systems running the Unix/Linux operating system. These may be stand-alone or networked and may exist in homogenous or heterogeneous environments. Some of these tasks are:

  • Monitoring system performance or event logs for normal operations

  • Overseeing appropriate level software installations and upgrades and related software packages.

  • Evaluating and applying system and security patches to ensure the security and stability of the environment.

  • Overseeing and implementing/recommending configuration and performance tuning, both hardware and software to ensure an improvement in system reliability and performance.

  • Developing and maintaining appropriate system documentation to ensure that documentation is current.

  • Manage 3-Tier environments that includes development, QA, and production

  • ITIL based service delivery for Incident Management, Change Management, Problem Management, Capacity Management, Configuration Management

  • Operating system patching

  • Operating system upgrade / migration

  • Virtualization strategies

Technical and Behavioral Skills

  • High school diploma or GED required

  • Background investigation and drug screen required

  • Knowledge and working experience with the multiple major vendor specific Unix/Linux operating system including: installation, patching, migration, security, networking, system internals, printing, performance tuning

  • Experience working in a medium or larger data center supporting physical and virtual Unix/Linux systems

  • Collaborates well with customers and other technical teams

  • Knowledge of standard networking ports and protocols

  • Experience with patch management solutions
