University Tax Manager

The University Tax Manager is responsible for overseeing the University¿s compliance with all Federal, State and Local tax laws, regulations, and other rules, including income, sales and use, excise, employment, property, withholding, and international tax as well as administering employee relocation benefits. These responsibilities include reporting and properly filing tax returns to various federal, state, and local agencies, issuing information returns and disclosures to third parties, researching tax positions, preparing memorandum, responding to auditor inquiries, and educating campus personnel regarding tax compliance.

What you'll do in this position:

  • Oversee, Review, and assist as needed with preparation of all required University federal, state, and local tax filings.

  • Provide and model professional level customer service in responding to emails, phone calls and inquiries from management, campus entities and tax authorities

  • Effective management of the University Tax Office.

  • Oversee BYU owned subsidiaries (LLC) tax compliance.

  • Attend bi-weekly Continuing Education's Out-of-State Activities Committee (OSAC) meetings to advise on out-of-state tax compliance matters and manage ongoing out of state registrations as required.

  • Serve as BYU primary representative in University Tax Peer Group collaboration, meetings, and correspondence.

  • Educate university personnel, departments, and administrators on various aspects of regulatory reporting and compliance.

  • Research tax law from statutory, judicial, and administrative sources, summarize principles, and apply to University's needs and situation.

  • Assist with tax-related questions and preparation of the annual tax checklist from external auditors.

  • Oversee regular and timely reconciliations of all tax-related general ledger accounts

  • Oversee preparation and filing of extensions for above returns and reports as required.

What qualifies you for this role:

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or other financial related field AND at least 8 years of general accounting experience or 4 years of public accounting. experience, OR the equivalent.

  • Experience researching, interpreting, summarizing, and applying tax principles.

  • Proven ability to simultaneously manage and coordinate multiple responsibilities and projects.

  • Ability to work effectively with others individually and in groups, and on university committees.

  • Demonstrated capacity to discuss and present complicated issues with diplomacy and professionalism.

Preferred

  • A master's degree in taxation.

  • Current Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant.

  • 5 years of tax research and compliance and/or audit experience.

  • Experience in higher education or a not-for-profit environment.
